Punk Labs has announced the release of an open source cross-platform drum synthesizer inspired by the Simmons SDS-V.

OneTrick Simian features 10 configurable voices that can be customized with selectable icons and colors to help quickly identify kit pieces. Each voice has its own velocity sensitive pitch, filter, and amp dynamics. Adjustable global saturation and 1176-style limiter with drive control brings the kit together.

Crash into the 80s with an open source drum synth inspired by hexagonal classics like the Simmons SDS-V. Thumping kicks, punchy snares, and sizzling cymbals coalesce with its clacky claves and crunchy claps. Bring saccharine synthwave sauce to your sublime soundscapes or drop indelable pewww pewww tom toms into your new nu-disco.

Highly customizable voices with great dynamics, filter sweeps, saturation, and drive that will literally flam your tracks. Toss [OT] SIMIAN into your DAW and just see what happens.

Available for Windows, macOS and Linux in VST3 and AU plugin formats, OneTrick Simian is priced $35 USD. The source code is available under the GPLv3 (or later).

Sweet! At various times I’ve had an SDS8 and a few Tama Techstars. They were super fun to twaddle around with while using my 707 individual outs as triggers. All of this stuff (including the 707) were dirt cheap in the mid-to-late 90’s! Now it would cost thousands. :-p

So I’m looking forward to playing with this. It’ll be cool to have velocity sensitivity and to be able to automate / record & playback the parameter changes. Thanks!

Hi robelanator :)

There's also VSDS-X 2.0 by Aly James Lab which is a phenomenal Simmons SDS-V software emulation.

Sounds and plays extraordinary. So damn close to the real thing.

More Simmons options is nice!
Oblivion Sound Labs Hex is another one.
This one sounds good from the demos, gonna have to check it out when I get a chance, thanks for posting this!

Those VSDS-X demos are bringing the nostalgia for sure!

Hex is a very modern sounding take on this style of drum synth. "Inspired by" rather than an attempt at emulation at the SDS. The manual mentions that the drums can be played melodically via midi, too, which definitely interests me.

It's pretty good. The only complaint I have is the preset system isn't very user-friendly. I don't see any way to save a user preset and the (hard-coded?) presets have to be scrolled through. There's no way to simply jump to eg. preset #17. 16 clicks will get you there. It's very hardware-like. Maybe that's meant to evoke nostalgia. I have nostalgia for sounds, but not systems.
Surely there must be consensus by now...

Yeah this one is awesome and very authentic sounding plugin. Very ballsy sounding and not weak.
Highly recommended!

Thank you for supporting Linux!!!! :)

(Also: I'm Accused of lying about Linux—it boots, runs my pro audio workflow, stays stable, updates--though yearly dismissed as “niche”. Yet I'm the deluded one.)

Sounds good! Does it have a multi-out?

Thanks.

No, it doesn't. I was considering mentioning that as another small complaint. I don't consider it a deal-breaker for a small, lightweight drum machine. If I absolutely need to I can load multiples instances.
