Specifically, I'm wondering how to achieve a clean dialogue without background noise or music. Hoiw do most people do this? Do you sample from multi-channel movie audio? Or are there ways to clean the parts you don't want?

I've tried a web search but nothing came up about this. So, any links would be appreciated. Thanks :tu:

Wow! That's feckin' superb! Bit out of my price range though! :(

there's an 'elements' bundle which is cheaper, but doesnt include all the plugins and tools. there's a demo version of that to see if it might do enough for you.
you'll frequently see it bundled with other software, so if it suits, it might come up for sale cheap second hand.

If you can find whatever it is you're looking to sample in 5.1 surround of AND if you're lucky, sometimes the center channel has relatively isolated dialog, though often it included bits of music and foley etc... And sometimes if another channel has just the unwanted sounds without the dialog you might be able to subtract it from the center and get some cancellation. Otherwise maybe try something like lalal.ai.

Happy to help.
Yeah, I noticed the like doesn't work, perhaps because of the unconventional domain suffix. Just enter "lalal.ai" (without the quotation marks) into your browser's address bar, or just google "lalal".

There are also similar services you might have better success with. You may also try the open source "Ultimate Vocal Remover" if you're feeling adventurous.

Keep in mind, these processes are primarily designed to separate elements of a music recording though they may also work for separating dialog from background sounds in a movie.

Just tried lalal.ai, it's even better than Izotope RX!
Thanks for the help. Never realised it was so easy when you have the right software at hand :tu:

In extension to this, I would suggest loading in VLC and checking the audio options there. Stumbled on this by accident after recording a movie off Freeview: The dialog wasn't there, only the music and effects. The options to fix this were under - Audio > Audio Track - where you should find switchable options if available.

Thanks for the tip. I was aware of this, but no films seem to have anything but a stereo track.

That's a shame. Certainly, I've only been aware for programs/movies recorded from television. If I'm sampling a movie then I think I'd want the background sound in there but I can see the appeal of being able to further process some dry dialogue.

The AI site seems quite reasonable - though I have nothing to try it with at present.
