Indeed! Boring update and way overpriced

Studio One 6 improves the user experience from top to bottom for real musicians, working composers, and professional engineers who work with artists.

PreSonus has continued their tradition on focusing on real music production and have once again left the toys at the kiddie table. That's bound to upset some people, but there are already plenty of toy DAWs for them to play with.

Others were concerned by Fender CEO Andy Mooney's statements that seemed to indicate a dumbing down of Studio One was coming. But the PreSonus team has managed to implement Andy's requirements very gracefully with the new Customization Editor and Smart Templates.

I'm really looking forward to upgrading. It will be hard to wait for Black Friday.

I didn't really see anything that I need in the new update. Am I missing something?

I don’t need templates or less menu items or a video track…i don’t need a vocoder or a 3 band EQ…it’s not that there are no toys (like the step sequencer, they added or the useless show page, non of which I use) there just isn’t very much new at all. Get you started templates and making menus simpler by removing things…that’s dumbing down to me, not more professional.

The new version is now slightly more focused on beginners, with ‘get you started’ templates and simplified menus, that’s great for some people and new users, I don’t need it and it certainly doesn’t make the DAW more professional, I think the aim is to make it simpler to use for beginners.
X32 and 24C mixers, S88MK3, Live + PUSH 3, Osmose, RedShift 6, Pro3, S4, Tempera, Syntakt, Digitone, OP1-F, OPXY, TR-1000, Eurorack, TD27 Drums, Guitars, Basses, Amps and of course lots of pedals!

It is dumbing it down in a way, superficially, sure.
But it's done in a very non-intrusive way by just provide quick start templates.

I really like the new Customization editor. I really hope you can set a different Customization for each Mixer View.

Little things like multiple Artists profiles are geared towards professional engineers.

But mostly, it's just the refinement of the workflow, pop-out sliders, a large channel overview window, Fader Flip, lyrics track, and particularly video editing that are all about adding features geared towards working professionals and songwriters.

A professional DAW is all about putting the tools you need to write, record, and mix at your fingertips when you need them. There is a level of refinement that Studio One is approaching with version 6.

It did that in version 5.5 for me so I guess I am lucky!

I'm starting to think that maybe Presonus did indeed allocate some of their human resources to a new "novice" DAW, as someone suggested some time ago here at Kvr. That would help to explain why V6 is looking so short in terms of new features and enhancements. Its development will slow down from now on, I guess.

Also, I think the price and overall (new) philosophy hints about which direction Studio One seems to be heading.

Well.. As many of you, at least I feel somewhat lucky V5 already fulfills my needs.

Neither do I but it was one of the top requested features.
video track
Depends on how good it is. This is the main reason I might upgrade.
…i don’t need a vocoder or a 3 band EQ…
Again, depends on how good they are. Can they compete with FabFilter or Softube? If they do, there’s the price of the upgrade right there.

In terms of professionality, fader flips is a big improvement.

I'm pretty sure I'm the one that requested templates (and Dual Pans) on the FR site, but I'm still not sure that they work the way I want. I basically wanted S1 to implement Track Templates similar to how Reaper implemented them. What you save is what you get - including multi-channel output on instruments, including any sends/receives, etc. They shouldn't work any differently for instruments or audio (the latter of which was absent entirely in S1). Only, I expected S1 to do it better than Reaper because of their browser.

I'm pretty sure that's what they did. But I honestly can't tell with any certainty from the little I've seen. But this is a paltry upgrade overall. Maybe BONES is right and there's just less to implement, but other DAWs still find ways to impress with each release. This one feels incredibly small. And the upgrade prices are indeed pretty insane considering how small a release this is.

It's ok though, I've been really happy with Reaper and had no intention of going back to S1, but I do like to keep it somewhat up to date. I'll just stay on 5.5. I skipped the 4.0 release cycle too so no biggie. Maybe I'll upgrade again come 7.0.

Post

I think that's gonna be my approach. I upgraded to 3 and 4 but I skipped 5 so now I'm tempted to get 5+6 together so it at least feels like I'm getting some semblance of value for money. I used to do the same with NI - taking alternate kompletes (until they went all sample based  ).

It would be good to have a demo that didn't expire, so I can test it longer than 30 days and not be excluded from running the demo until the next major release version appears years later. I might not want to buy it now, but I might on Black Friday or perhaps sometime next year. Although it changes to a Prime version, you can't really get a feel for why you would want to buy it, with missing features that you want to try.

Atm, I'm on the fence with version 6.0, whilst version 5 seems to have the bulk of any features that are significant and possibly improved.
