best FREE bread&butter presets synth?

Now, if I was forced to choose just one, I’d choose (of the several available), an SFZ player. That pretty much covers everything—but the OP wanted a synth.
C/R, dongles & other intrusive copy protection equals less-control & more-hassle for consumers. Company gone-can’t authorize. Limit to # of auths. Instability-ie PACE. Forced internet auths. THE HONEST ARE HASSLED, NOT THE PIRATES.

A thread created earlier this year is "necro?" OK...
For the OP's stated desire for simplicity and ease of use. He didn't say "this will be the only thing I use ever." Just something simple for quick sketching.I never could see the point of choosing just one.
Not necessarily...although I don't know what kind of sounds if any the free sfz players come with. But yeah, with a little extra work, you could find a group of basic instruments easily enough.a SFZ player (take your pick), you’d have the absolute top notch best of both worlds regardless of the architecture you are using.
Although really, now that I think of it, this could probably be solved with the stock stuff many DAWs come with. I use Mixcraft and it has a very nice set of VIs that come with. True it's not free, but very inexpensive, as many DAWs are. But something to consider for those who have a DAW and haven't really checked out what comes with it.

Maybe not small and fast, but usable free VST plugins...
NI Komplete Start is free and includes the Kontakt Player & factory selection of instruments: https://www.native-instruments.com/en/p ... -products/

RetroHead GMulator for Synth1

If you (OP) can live with Nils' K1v for your purpose then that combo deserves a listen IMO.

Or simple or easy, at least not in the way the OP is asking, I think. But yeah does come with a lot of stuff for free.
...and leaves a lot of the basics out as the OP was looking for, like solo string instruments, solo brass, etc.IK SampleTank CS is free and includes 50 factory instruments: https://www.ikmultimedia.com/products/s ... etank-4-cs

Comes with zero presets, so zero instruments. He isn't looking for just a synth.

Well you just shot down a few suggestions, but have nothing to contribute. So what's your point in posting?mixyguy2 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 03, 2022 12:23 amOr simple or easy, at least not in the way the OP is asking, I think. But yeah does come with a lot of stuff for free.

Good tip! If you already happen to have the mega Synth1 patch zip file with most of the available online banks collected, it has the Retrohead GMulator vol 1, 2, & 3 included. Over 16,000 patches in the zip file I'm using. https://veryrandomstreams.blogspot.com/ ... -free.htmlEtienne1973 wrote: ↑Sun Oct 02, 2022 10:42 pmSynth1 by Daichi Laboratory (Ichiro Toda)

The best way to organize & search for these patches in RetroHead GMulator is with Neutrino Sky's free Synth1 Librarian. All you need to do is browse the total collection by "Banks" and look for RetroHead. https://neutrinosky.com/

And if you doubt that Synth1 is a capable synth: "Synth1 is a digital synthesizer based on the Clavia Nord Lead 2. Since the Nord Lead 2 is also a digital synthesizer,Synth1 is able to emulate it more closely than digital synthesizers that aim to emulate analogue synthesis. Synth1 combines the common sound synthesis method of subtractive synthesis with FM synthesis, with the first oscillator having a parameter for frequency modulation." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synth1

I "shot them down" because they didn't seem to fit the OP's stated requirements (as even you admitted on one of your suggestions). And if you'd actually read the thread, you know I have contributed...in fact, shooting down bad suggestions is contributing. But enjoy your hissy.

The OP found the perfect solution K1. Which perfectly fits his description. If this thread isn’t locked, it will on and on list synths which don’t fit his description…
(Hint for #wwjd: you can lock it…)

It's actually quite easy with the Librarian.
Believe it or not, there are quite a few bread and butter sounds in there!

Fair enough! I think. I can't say for sure but that does sound viable.
OK I didn't realize that was a preset bank...Etienne1973 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 03, 2022 7:13 pm Before ... my tip was Synth1 + GM Preset Bank for Synth1.
