Hi,

does anyone nowadays even use rex files, now that every daw can chop, stretch...?

If you do, why?

Both have their use. Anyone? Most likely amongst Reason users: sure.

rex can hold some extra metadata about where the slice points are. With wav files that's uncommon.
The ReCycle slicing technique is simpler (will leave silent gaps when slowing down) and gives different results than brute time-stretching.
We are the KVR collective. Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated. Image

I think even Reason Studios is moving on from the .rex file format, at least in terms of support outside of Reason.

They don’t offer the stand alone Rex Shared Library on their site anymore, the page is still indexed on Google but it redirects to the help.reasonstudios home page:

https://help.reasonstudios.com/hc/en-us ... t-in-Logic

There’s also zero hits for it in their support and community KBs.

ReCycle hasn’t been updated in, what, 8+ years? It’s officially “not compatible” with the last three versions of macOS, is “untested” on Windows 11.

I’m honestly surprised it’s still for sale at this point lol.

That said, I really liked the Rex file format, but I’d venture to guess Reason being a closed ecosystem for so long probably squashed the format from reaching its full potential.

I’m sure some Reason die-hard user will come out guns blazing in defense of it but it’s an antiquated if not dead file format as far as I’m concerned. And I use Reason and have thousands of Rex files lol.

There’s a Rex file converter on the macOS App Store for like 6 bucks that I bought, but converting to a standard audio file basically strips away the main point of the file format, the slicing.

I use wav, but REX2 had some uses in Reason. Maybe(??) they are dropping Recycle as you can do a lot of REX stuff in Reason now. However, I always had to manually edit REX loops that were created in Reason in recycle.

Do they work as expected in all their slicey goodness? UVI Falcon is supposed to support the file format but last few times I tried it didn’t work, just said unknown file or the like.
