What would you say is best DAW when it comes to MPE support (or are there any differences)?

What DAW has the fastest bug fixes?

Post

IMO, Bitwig has the best MPE support. It has an unmatched modulation system that integrates with MPE.

I use multiple DAWS (see my signature) and in my personal experience and opinion I would say Bigwig.
X32 and 24C mixers, S88MK3, Live + PUSH 3, Osmose, RedShift 6, Pro3, S4, Tempera, Syntakt, Digitone, OP1-F, OPXY, TR-1000, Eurorack, TD27 Drums, Guitars, Basses, Amps and of course lots of pedals!

Yeah... various DAW's may have little niceties for MPE. Like Live's editor the note expressions are visible all at once. In Bitwig you tab between them. Not a big deal, but a nice little advantage for Live.

But once you add in all the capabilities of the Bitwig modulation system, Bitwig can do a whole range of new and interesting MPE techniques simply not possible in other DAW's.

Also have multiple DAWs.
Also +1 for Bitwig.
Especially seemless integration of ROLI seaboard is great.
Seems to be a collective consent here. 😆

Is this topic a setup? :hihi:

Bitwig of course!

Interesting, I would thought Cubase would be leader in the MPE front.

How about bug fixes?

Post

Bitwig is the DAW that is updated most often (including bug fixes), Live has quite a few bugs fix updates but it stays in beta for a long time (like a year) so you end up with 2 versions....S1 is also pretty good, most DAWS are stable now a days sop bugs tend to be more like 'niggles' most often.

Initially Cubase was... but you can do a variety of stuff with Bitwig's modulation system and MPE that is not possible in Cubase.

Bitwig stands by itself now... especially with CLAP.

Definitely Bitwig. You also get a nice on screen grid keyboard if you have a touch screen! Although it's too bad that there aren't screens with pressure input or velocity.

And yeah CLAP is putting everything on another level regarding mpe and polyphonic modulations. For those few plugins that are supporting it, like U-He.

Bitwig, immediately followed by Waveform. Both are solid with MPE. (I can't comment on Cubase, however, one way or the other.)

Studio One has 4/5 MPE support: it does not support the MPE dimension of "Lift." (Bones helped me prove that a few months ago. It was a bit confusing as the support person I was working with at the time apparently thought Studio One 5.5 DID support "Lift." The second support person I worked with originally seemed to think that, but finally found the tech notes that stated otherwise.) Other than that, the four dimensions that are recognized work well in Studio One and "Lift" is the least used dimension, so if you're okay with that, that is an option.

Bitwig updates more than any other DAW I've worked with, I think. Both bug fixes and notable additions are usually included.

Does the newest Bitwig update bring retrospective midi record? The earlier version didn't have.

Generally, whether a DAW is good for MPE has been about how good a go between it is from the Controller to the MPE synth. Does it record all the MPE data and make it easy to edit. That's basically it.

With Bitwig Instruments of course, it goes way beyond that. And now with CLAP it does too for those CLAP plugins that support Poly-modulation.

Up until now it depended on the plugin synth how well it supported MPE. Now Bitwig can add MPE capability and not just be a go-between. For example, with Diva (CLAP version), I can create powerful expression curves even though the synth itself has no such capability. I can do stuff like hold 3 notes on my Linnstrument and when I press a note down, that note plays a parameter sequence and if I press it farther it plays a different sequence. It can be set to fade between the sequences based on pressure or quantized to discrete states as you add pressure.

I can arpeggiate some held notes and have multiple different states in pressure or timbre so pressing a note down or moving on the y-axis and those played notes go from a pluck to a pad to percussion. It's easy to set up and it can be played realtime and is per note.

When RePro (CLAP) comes out, it will go from a mod matrix of 2 slots to unlimited and with complex MPE setups easily possible.

No other DAW even attempts this kind of capability. Bitwig has gone well beyond what has been considered MPE until now.

Yep, and I think while Bitwig has pissed everyone off lately with the add-on pack, I think people who are threatening to leave will realize quite quickly how much better so many things are in Bitwig, including MPE. But also things like mulit-out VST chains on a single track, and the modulation system in general, and the remote control set up, and hybrid tracks, and the stability etc. I recently got Live again but it's such a huge reminder of how much Bitwig got right.

Still no :x I run Live in the background in case I accidentally play something cool and can't reproduce it
