Full Throttle "thunder"

How to make that sound...

I am trying to come up with some ideas on how to reproduce the sound I have in mind that I first heard while playing the video game Full Throttle. This sound is present at various points in the soundtrack.

To give you a better understanding of what it is use this as a reference and try listening to:
  • Track 27 "Gotta get moving" at minute ;
  • track 28 "Pleasant Nightfall" on the video at minute ;
  • You also find it almost constantly along the development of the track "Backtracking" (track 38) and in track 31 "Already in Trouble.";
  • In the introduction of track 37 "Introduction to the Vapor");
The sound is also present in tracks 18, 25, 43 and 48.

The sound is a kind of growl, thunder, apparently distorted, mostly dark and low in frequency, always treated with a delay.

Do you have any idea how it might be possible to reproduce it, synthesize it?
Do you think it is a prerecorded sound played through a sampler or rather is it some preset from some old synth?

Thank you so much for your support

Vital Preset - FAR from perfect. Hit note E4

You can spend ages on this to get it closer but the core of the sound it there but it sounds layered to me like a dog bark mixed through it.

thank you so much @choos for your reply.
Your sound really resembles the original sample.
As you said, it is likely an assemblage of several components (synthetic and sampled).
Thank you very much.

I am glad to have found a place here where we can discuss such vertical aspects of sound design.

At 30:25 it definitely sounds like a sample to me, listen to how the full spectrum shifts with the base note. I think it's a dog barking, lofi sample (8bit 11kHz?) mainly pitched down. And obviously with delay.

Thank you so much BertKoor for you help.

I would like to take this opportunity to share with you my implementation of sound in a synthesiser inside SuperCollider. You can find the source code of the sound here.

I thought for now to go the route of procedural sound generation in my favourite sound development environment.

In the near future I will also try the route of manipulating an audio sample. Maybe then, putting one on top of the other will bring us even closer.

Thank you very much for your support.
