theres no such thing like "the best".
I like fm synths and these are my experiences:
OPS7 is beautiful sounding, and can load and browse sysex files.
Unify comes with dexed, and this is a killer combination.
Arturia DX7 is cool, however in its presets settings you should set one parameter to 'full' to achive the best sound.
Rob Papen Blue II is a superb hybrid fm monster synth. And Blue III is coming in the near future.
U-he Zebra also can be considered as an fm synth.
Fm8 would be cool, but it seems Ni will stop develop it.
FlStudio has sytrus fm synth.
Phase plant also can be an fm synth, but this synth is too complicated for me.
Avenger also can fm between its 8 possible oscs....

Could you elaborate on the parameter to set to "full" in the Arturia DX7 presets? I have the synth but I've never heard of this and am confused as to which parameter is being referred to. I love Dexed, so if you want to emulate a DX7 that gets my vote. Being free is a big plus.

not exactly "Yamaha style" FM, but Zebra 2 is more than just good enough for my noob-ish FM needs.
IL Sytrus is killer too, but on Mac sadly only available as a plugin inside FL Studio (not sure if M1 ready though)

The GAS is always greener on the other side!

In this video "Woody Piano Shack" made a comparison video, and ~17:20 he realised when he changes presets the velocity mode also changes:
So he had to make another comparison video, when he sets that parameter in each presets, to get the right sound - this is another video: "Arturia DX7 V vs Yamaha DX7 done RIGHT!"
Side Note: Currently I have the DX7 from Vcollection8 and this setting is hidden behind the Cogwheel icon. And still changes after each preset change.

F’em is a beast, I’ve always found FM synths a bit of a PITA to program, but F’em is a blast once you learn its interface.

agree - quite difficult because there is just so much one can manipulate, but worth learningmachinesworking wrote: Sun Oct 09, 2022 6:38 am F’em is a beast, I’ve always found FM synths a bit of a PITA to program, but F’em is a blast once you learn its interface.
