Good points, it's a little bit of both, but mostly a pre-paid upgrade. Now with the addition of add-ons, are people going to blindly support future updates, not knowing which ones will be core BW updates and which ones will cost extra? It's going to be a delicate dance for them at the least.machinesworking wrote: Sun Oct 09, 2022 12:14 am Bitwig is not a subscription model, and that's half the problem.

lol wut? Updates to Bitwig will be updates and covered by the optional year-long upgrade plan. Add-ons will be add-ons and cost whatever they Bitwig says they cost.eerie_audio wrote: Sun Oct 09, 2022 1:39 am Now with the addition of add-ons, are people going to blindly support future updates, not knowing which ones will be core BW updates and which ones will cost extra? I started on Logic 5 with a PowerBook G4 550Mhz. I now have a MacBook Air M1 and it's ~165x faster! So, why is my music not proportionally better?

DAWs are like learning languages, easy for some, hard for others.Propellerhands wrote: Sun Oct 09, 2022 1:35 am Why some people even switch DAWS? I mean sure, if you picked up GarageBand at first it makes sense to move to something more appropriate. But all DAWs are more or less the same, differs just workflow and GUI. I suggest trying every single demo and then deciding. To me personally, if I switched DAWs (currently Reason), I would choose Ableton. Not complicated, and quick to use.
I used Digital Performer when I started, and bought Reason to reWire into it. That's probably what made it more or less irrelevant to me what DAW I use. It's not hard to learn a new DAW, and to say that Reason 1.0 was anything like a DAW was a stretch, but most DAWs had nothing like Reasons set of instruments.
Later I had an issue with a minor bug in DP that drove me nuts. I ended up in Logic for years until Logic 7 crashed on me by the minute. I'm adept at squashing bugs and Mac OS issues etc. so it wasn't that. I re-up'd my DP license and went back. Meanwhile Live does things to audio at the time that none of my software could, and it could reWire to DP. Recently I've been using MPE controllers but Live and DP both did not natively support it, so I poked around with Reaper and Logic again, and bought a copy of Bitwig. Years later DP and Live both have MPE support, so I'm back there.
My question would be more like why wait around for a feature in your DAW that other DAWs can do without issue? They all do more or less the same things, but if you want Articulation mapping, SysEx support, robust MPE, movie scoring support, scoring tabulator, complicated and advanced modulation features, multiple projects in the same project, uninterrupted audio engines or CPU optimization etc. etc. well... these are all things that separate DAWs out from each other.

Lol you're missing the point. In the past Bitwig has added samplers, synths, FX, even the Grid, into Bitwig as part of the Update Plan. The spectral suite is the first time that Bitwig has charged for any embedded plug in, they've all been part of The Plan. Now we do not have a clue what will be included, it might be that all new plug ins will be add ons that you pay for separately and only features that are hard to separate out are included in your Update Plan, like Comping, or the Grid, but a new synth or FX will cost, it might not be. There is no line in the sand now, and you pretending there is, is weird.eerie_audio wrote: Sun Oct 09, 2022 1:39 amGood points, it's a little bit of both, but mostly a pre-paid upgrade. ^^ after using Acid Pro for a while, I found Live 5 ... the workflow was exactly what I'd always wanted from a DAW. So quick & easy to get ideas together I sometimes feel like I'm cheatingPropellerhands wrote: Sun Oct 09, 2022 1:35 am I would choose Ableton. Not complicated, and quick to use.

Now that they have removed the nag bubble on startup that really pissed me off i have decided to continue using Bitwig since i have the update plan until July next year and i will vote with my wallet when that day comes.
What they did to us who still are on the old Eula Contract until a renew is needed is not right so i will watch closely on what they will do with that.
Bitwig is a great and unique daw so we shall see what the future will bring with these unknown changes.

I was finalising a track night, final little tweaks. It's such a good DAW to work with.
Hopefully they sort something out about the terms change. I'm sure they'll have some great updates in the pipeline.

In the old upgrade plan there for sure have been stuff that could have been labeled as add ons that you paid for via the upgrade plan. going forward this isn't the case always.syntonica wrote: Sun Oct 09, 2022 2:51 amlol wut? fl studio is really awesome
i used fl studio 9 in the past but don like it that much
but for now is really great and fl studio 21 is around the corner
and the cost was 179€and i will get any update for free , that is so awesome
and fl patcher is great alternative to bitwig function
also fl studio workflows force you to end your songs
in bitwig i enjoy the possibilties but never end a song
i finished 3 songs in fl studio in one day
so for me was the best switch and now i can save my money
and make music
i wish you all the best make your desicions but when you have not so much money
fl studio is the best choice

it's not about which is which, it's about the ratio it should be at least 2:1 or 3:1 between core and addons I can accept that they would like to survive but not the greediness...I would like to support new technologies like clap instead of devices that can be used only in the BWS environment ... so hopefully there will be a healthy balance between themeerie_audio wrote: Sun Oct 09, 2022 1:39 amGood points, it's a little bit of both, but mostly a pre-paid upgrade. Upset because of the lack of communication, yes i am! Will I switch to another DAW? Definitely not. No other DAW give me that what i love on Bitwig-DAW. I believe there will be a healthy balance between core and addons.

This reminds me of the time when Fruity Loops had free lifetime updates, and then Image Line changed its name to 'FL Studio' and said that it was a 'new' product, and you had to buy it even though you already owned Fruity Loops. And I well remember the idiots on this very forum who tried to argue that FL Studio was somehow sufficiently 'different' to Fruity Loops that the lifetime upgrade no longer applied. Thankfully Image Line haven't made that mistake again, and I'm a very happy FL Studio user, I paid around £130 for the Producer Edition about ten years ago and have been using it ever since.
Gee... how can Image Line possibly make money when they allow free lifetime updates? They can do that because millions of people start buying DAWs for the first time EVERY YEAR, and millions of people lose interest, don't have enough time, etc. to continue using their DAW and making music every year. There are always MILLIONS of potential new customers for FL Studio every year, and exactly the same applies to ALL DAWs - so why are all the rest charging you for yearly updates?

The interface looked like it was developed on Windows XP (actually, that's an insult to Windows XP) - it's the 'Facebook' interface of DAWs. It looks like absolute crap, (hence I call it 'Greybleton') and the piano roll is dreadful compared to FL Studio's. But then ALL piano rolls are rubbish compared to FL Studio's. Why don't the developers of other DAWs improve their piano rolls to compete with FL Studio? Because they literally DON'T CARE about their customers, that's why.andreasg wrote: Sun Oct 09, 2022 11:12 amand ableton live is the only daw that you could use as a live instrument.Aloysius wrote: Wed Oct 05, 2022 10:14 pm Ableton Live, where a lot of the features of the wig originated.
