Best FM synth of 2022?

F'em, Bazille, Dexed (free!), Either phase-4 (built into bitwig) or Operator (built into ableton) are my choices. Surge XT includes some FM algos as oscillator models too and is also free and open source like dexed.
Zebra 2 is pretty great my one complaint with it as an FM synth is that it doesn't have the partials or undertone tuning modes that you can use in ACE/Bazille so tuning to exact ratios can require a bit of math/a table/doing it by ear. I would like to think Zebra 3 will correct this (given those tuning modes exist in other more modern u-he products), and I believe if possible the plan is to merge the main oscs and the FMOs (in zebra 2 the FMOs are capable of being FM carriers but are not full wavetable oscs like the main oscillators - which cannot be FM'd)

Tranzistow wipes the floor with all of those mentioned above .
I only found out that you can load user samples in it’s contour generator , which you then use as either a carrier or modulator .
Which brings tranzistow into tg-sy territory .

Awesome, thanksdune_rave wrote: Sun Oct 09, 2022 5:53 amHi!seangm wrote: Sat Oct 08, 2022 7:51 pmCould you elaborate on the parameter to set to "full" in the Arturia DX7 presets? I have the synth but I've never heard of this and am confused as to which parameter is being referred to. Thanks.dune_rave wrote: Sat Oct 08, 2022 7:29 pm Arturia DX7 is cool, however in its presets settings you should set one parameter to 'full' to achieve the best sound.
In this video "Woody Piano Shack" made a comparison video, and ~17:20 he realised when he changes presets the velocity mode also changes:
So he had to make another comparison video, when he sets that parameter in each presets, to get the right sound - this is another video: "Arturia DX7 V vs Yamaha DX7 done RIGHT!"
Side Note: Currently I have the DX7 from Vcollection8 and this setting is hidden behind the Cogwheel icon. And still changes after each preset change.

For me personally, Arturia's DX7 has the best tradeoff between sound, GUI/workflow and features.

Bazille for me - even init sounds special to me - overall out of all my VSTs it's by far the on I think closest sounds like playing hardware - not sure why
When CLAP support is hopefully added soon it'll be even more incredible

It's PWD makes it sound hardware like, don't know why. Check Casio CZ, the original PWD synth as well.Buckster wrote: Sun Oct 09, 2022 4:34 pm Bazille for me - even init sounds special to me - overall out of all my VSTs it's by far the on I think closest sounds like playing hardware - not sure why

Hi! In the meantime I have checked Arturia dx7 forum, and there someone also mentioned woody piano shack video. He wrote : the maker of the video used a keyboard that had 0-100 midi velocit output, and that was the cause he had to switch that velocity setting in the software. If you use a normal midi keyboard that sends 0-127 midi velocity, you don't have to touch that setting in the presets.seangm wrote: Sun Oct 09, 2022 2:02 pmAwesome, thanksdune_rave wrote: Sun Oct 09, 2022 5:53 amHi!seangm wrote: Sat Oct 08, 2022 7:51 pmCould you elaborate on the parameter to set to "full" in the Arturia DX7 presets? You can do that using the frequence modulation in the Merger module in MSoundFactory and the regular oscillators with any sample you want loaded into them, as many as you wantgentleclockdivider wrote: Sun Oct 09, 2022 8:22 am Tranzistow wipes the floor with all of those mentioned above .

Ghost by Exacoustics is pretty good IMO.

Got Dexed, FM8, Arturia DX7 V, Waves Flow Motion, & F.'em. Have to say that F.'em is a beast!
Here's Waves Flow Motion. It's been around a few years, but doesn't seem to get a lot of attention. It's got an unconventional UI and a different workflow for visualizing the different oscillators modulating each other, rather than by using algorithms. It's capable of making some interesting sounds.

I hope you mean phase modualtion and not linear frequency mod , phase modulation is what all yamaha fm synths use (I am sure we all know that by now) .YnJ wrote: Mon Oct 10, 2022 12:58 pmYou can do that using the frequence modulation in the Merger module in MSoundFactory and the regular oscillators with any sample you want loaded into them, as many as you wantgentleclockdivider wrote: Sun Oct 09, 2022 8:22 am Tranzistow wipes the floor with all of those mentioned above .

I am aware that meldo does Phase .mod and really like the fm inside MSF, but ..
Can the loaded samples be set to 0hz with starting phase adjusted and being phase modulated (FM) , so they acts as pure waveshapers ?

My short answer is I don't know. I just discovered this feature a couple of days ago myself, and I haven't even looked at half the modules in MSoundFactory yet and still discover new features in the modules I use, so I'm probably not the right person to ask
