i demoed audiothing speakers and like it a lot but its 100 dollars and has some flaws. seems like theres not enough usable speaker types (imo).

i also have chipsounds but cant figure out how to re-access it on plogue. i need to sort that out.

are there any other options? also a way to add more speaker types to Speakers maybe?

Try voxengo boogex and then download some speaker IRs.

That's the correct answer.

The thread at the top of the Effects forum has a lifetimes worth of free IRs to go through.

The question is: "what it is exactly you are looking for?"

AudioThing Speakers is not your typical cabinet emulation at all (it's also doing other stuff besides processing IRs btw)... a typical guitar-amp plus -cabinet is hi-fi in comparison (while of course being lo-fi in comparison to hifi-speakers) . If you look at the pics for the "Selection of Speakers’ IR Collection" on the product's website you should get a good idea of what Speakers is aiming at.

And thus I would much rather compare it to something like XLN's RC-20, even though the latter doesn't even include any cabinet-emulation at all.

i am not looking for guitar amp style stuff mainly. i want to simulate different kinds of speakers and combine with dearVR Pro (I think what its called) for sound design and placing things in a space. I think Speakers is amazing but it just seems like theres not enough different "IRs" and it is mostly limited to a very tinny sound.

Honestly I don't really know what IRs are or how they work, or how to "add" them. i thought IRs were for convolution reverbs, not speaker design. Will have to look into that, i don't really get it.

They can be for either, convolution/IR players use Impulse Responses to simulate how frequencies dissipate over time so can be used for speaker emulation, mic emulation, real spaces, imaginary spaces, a recording medium (e.g. tape, vhs) or any representation of a 'thing' (a room, an audio device) that carries/transmits a sound.

Convolution reverb is my desert island effect, and not just for reverb !

Well you dont really know how they work to use them. And you dont 'add' them to Boogex, you just load them, like you would a sample.

And IRs are one of the most common methods of emulating speakers in audio software, and there are thousands of speaker IRs out there, many of which are -not- of guitar cabinets; speaker emulations for sound design for film etc were being done that way by the Speakerphone plugin long before anyone was doing it for guitar amps.
