Volume Button Seems like a Waste.

Why can't we get a combined Volume/Octave/Transpose button then we could add a Switch 3 button. just a random thought

I must admit that I personally never use the Volume or Preset buttons, but I don’t perform live. For people playing live who need to quickly change sounds or volume, they are useful controls and are essential controls on any MIDI performance keyboard.

Also, one of the problems of printing functions on the panel is that if you change a button’s function, the printing no longer makes sense.

Note that if you set the Right Split to “CC Faders” and make the right split only 1 column wide with Split mode on, the 8 buttons will act at 8 CC toggle buttons on the right edge of the playing surface, each toggling its assigned CC between 0 and 127.

Also, note that that even if you use sustain pedal, you can connect any momentary or on/off type switch to the other foot switch connection in order to have a Switch 3.

Also, a little-used feature is the “Virtual Third Foot Switch”, with a unique assignment if you press both foot switches at the same time. You can learn about it in the Panel Settings page, Global Settings tab, search for “Virtual Third Foot Switch”.

I perform live, almost exclusively, and definitely prefer having the volume on its own page. It's a critical function, often needing to be changed in a hurry, on-the-fly, so I wouldn't want to be hitting the wrong slider by accident, should it share a page with other destructive functions like transpose.

What would be useful though, Roger, is if volume up/down were options (like preset +/-) for the two panel/foot switches, so I can adjust the volume while still playing.

I have never even noticed the "Volume button", I had to look for it when I read this thread!

Octave/Transpose though gets used quite a bit, that ones a good button.

What about getting a little faderbox like a Korg NanoKontrol? There you can even mix multile channels. Or a Midi volume pedal… Especially for live play I would never go on stage without some extra controllers. Some are as cheap as a set of strings…

Well, I already have immediate access to most of the parameters I need onstage.

A lot of thought has gone into the ergonomics of my live rig: i.e. it is elegantly laid-out, extremely functional (with a ton of control at my hands and feet), reasonably light-weight, quick to set up and strike, packs up tight, and travels well, for what it is.

However, it is also at that proverbial tipping-point, wherein adding anything else (no matter how small) is not trivial, in terms of whatever cables, connectors, hubs, and power supplies might be necessary.

All that to say, if I could access 'volume' from the LinnStrument's panel switches, that would be slightly more convenient; but it would not be worth adding a tertiary device (i.e. NanoKontrol), which would require another MIDI host, power supply, and two cables to make it happen (never mind finding a place to put it).

The Argon sounds great and, as you've noted, the formfactor works with the LinnStrument in this context nicely. It's a very capable synth, the interface is well-thought-out, and MPE is actually implemented properly (including onboard MIDI channel filtering).

When you add all that up, it really is the only synth that I can work with in this setup. Thankfully, I like the sound of it. It has a lot of facility for sound design and expressive modulation. And because it's a wavetable synth at heart, it can produce a number of sounds that I would otherwise need a rompler for (i.e. pianos, strings, etc.).

It's a solid synth all 'round. Well supported too, and that's not trivial.

+1 on the Argon8m, it's always connected to my Linnstrument.
Great variety of tone and having real midi map-able knobs is great.
Tweaking on the fly is awesome. And yes they got MPE right.

Nice rig setup, but 3 Boomerangs????

That's what the volume on the Argon is for.
