Irony is still dead.
There's a ton of little single-dev synths out there that just don't get (or even want) the notoriety they may deserve. Or, the poor devs just can't keep up with all the changes to plugin formats, platforms, etc. and just throw up their hands in frustration.
I agree HyPoly is quite nice, as is Invader2, Aspect, Phonec, etc. Unfortunately, they are up against the feature rich powerhouses that give a lot more value for money, including regular maintenance updates. (Phonec and ArcSyn are still not Mac M1-compatible.)

I started on Logic 5 with a PowerBook G4 550Mhz. I now have a MacBook Air M1 and it's ~165x faster! So, why is my music not proportionally better?

It is good but I wouldn't say the best. The original one with the foil capacitors was better.VitaminD wrote: Mon Oct 17, 2022 4:37 pm OnePingOnly.
It only provides one ping. But it is the best ping.

THIS, or the older VA-2 ... one of my top 5 lonely island, bread and butter synths, sounds like nothing else out there, excellent for soundscapes.BBFG# wrote: Mon Oct 17, 2022 7:47 pm Will add AAS Ultra-Analog VA-3 though. Pretty powerful synth that doesn't get mentioned as much as others.
Edit: another underrated synth must be Air's Vacuum Pro. I just love that beast for some gritty and dirty sounds of all sorts.

I really like VK-1 it sounds really good and it's free, very simple to use too, wish they support AU and VST3.

I played with it around 10 years ago , and imho it has been surpassed by stuff like Alpha Forever which is also a steal and sounds greataudiojunkie wrote: Mon Oct 17, 2022 7:36 pm KarmaFX Synth Modular 2

It had tons of attention (deservedly so), until version 2 when they gave it a price equal to other synths. Suddenly all interest dried up. Seems really unfortunate to me. This thing is so powerful and flexible. It's a shame that people begrudge that out of the developer after all of his hard work. It's a great synth!
NOTE: This beast is currently on sale for 3 more days for $39.80 <---This is a STEAL!!!
Regular price is $199.

Fair enough. I personally haven't tried Alpha Forever's Modular, so I can't speak comparisons.gentleclockdivider wrote: Mon Oct 17, 2022 10:57 pmI played with it around 10 years ago , and imho it has been surpassed by stuff like Alpha Forever which is also a steal and sounds greataudiojunkie wrote: Mon Oct 17, 2022 7:36 pm KarmaFX Synth Modular 2

Is it true, however, that it only supports VST2.4?
EDIT: It looks like KarmaFX only supports VST2.4 as well. I have no upper ground there either.

v1 was underrated too...I agree with gentleclockdivider that AF sounds great...one of the few software synths that gives me hardware vibes,...but Karma has sampler and granular sampler modules...these add a much wider timbre palette...when I demoed AF, I don't remember it having those...the Karma he demoed 10 yrs ago didn't have those either...with all the changes, I would revisit the demo for all the folks who only played with v1....and in demoing both AF and Karma; Karma felt much faster, more intuitive, and more fun to me...that is the cognitive performance aspect both objective and subjective that is hard to predict...as a guy who isn't into synths, the only thing that was as fast and fun an experience as Karma for me was AGLaudiojunkie wrote: Mon Oct 17, 2022 11:31 pmFair enough. I don't see how you get better value for money from a $200 synth than from the right $20 synth. I get far more use from my low cost "indie" synths that I do from PhasePlant, Hive or DUNE, which makes them far better value for money to me.syntonica wrote: Mon Oct 17, 2022 8:26 pmI agree HyPoly is quite nice, as is Invader2, Aspect, Phonec, etc. Unfortunately, they are up against the feature rich powerhouses that give a lot more value for money, including regular maintenance updates. I haven't used ArcSyn for a while but it is definitely very under-rated. It's got a good set of features, is easy to work with and it sounds great.
