Looks interesting but you can only play midi notes in, not add them to a Piano roll. You can edit them afterwards but a bit of a workflow killer for non players, or even players trying to input on a touch screen.

You can send projects to Live via the cloud, but not the other way.

I just downloaded it and it's pretty intuitive. The simplest way to use it is to play a pattern rather than try to edit things - you can always do it from Live. So comping rather than fine tuning.

For me the most interesting thing is the sampling options - There are probably easier ways to do it, but right now the workflow would be to go out, record too many things, come back to your studio and upload them, take ages auditioning the samples trying to work out which is which and then finally start to process them and put them in a rack.

Instead you can now just open up Note, make a drum rack, find a pad, record a sample, edit it and then move onto the next. Then see how they sound together, on the spot.

I think Beatmaker 3 would have a similar workflow, which also exports to Live, and has far more options. Though the wavetable and live effects being there already is an advantage. Not sure if Beatmaker exports drum kits and sampler instruments as racks and samplers/simplers.

Note definitely isn't as complex as other mobile DAWs but I think the attractive thing is that it's effectively part of Live. How could I put it? Basically I don't want to use a phone to make a tune, but I do want to be able to muck around with Live when I'm not at my desk. This means being able to create a very rough sketch while I'm out and about and then pick it up seamlessly. No exporting, importing - literally the only thing I need to do is save the project file and open it in Live.

OK, this one just killed Korg Gadget as my go-to sketch pad for iPad.

I think the real impressive thing in the app is the tech. It figures out the tempo form what you played, it captures everything you play in including automation and you have the choice to add it to the clip. You don't have to tap out a tempo then record the track, just play it in and it will keep time. You don't have to tap an automation button to enable automation record, you don't have to worry about losing some inspired playing, it's always listening and capturing. That's the future of the DAW imo. I can imagine some of that making it to Ableton Live at some point.

No it doesn’t, but it is still light years ahead of this garbage in terms of features and usability.

Just got this and had a lot of fun making some loops. The auto tempo detection is great. What I especially like is how you can improvise new additions to your loops and then press the add button to include them, or dismiss them. I have no idea if this is a feature of other similar apps for mobile as I've only really used GarageBand.

I don’t think it offers enough to replace Gadget for me. Really interested to see how this develops though.

The problem for me is that Live projects exported by Gadget don't work on latest Live for me. They crash every time.
