iZotope discontinues many plugins (iZotope and Exponential Audio)

Izotope cites code management as the reason some products aren't being updated but it didn't stop them from offering bundles/specials/sales on those exact products for the last two years!

That said Trash2 is one of the most unique, comprehensive, feature packed, and versatile sound processing tools to ever hit the software. I challenge Izotope to find a viable competitor to Trash. I love my Soundtoys, Softube, UA, AudioDamage, Glitchmachines stuff but Trash2 achieves what often requires entire chains of plugins to accomplish AND allows for quick concise control of the results; almost every section offers multiband controls.

There is no reason to abandon Trash2 and the users.
Foregoing the development of Trash3 is Izotope walking away from money on the table.

They offer support for still 12 months and you can download, activate and use them forever according to their FAQs. It‘s normal to drop support for a product after years. Where‘s the problem then?

You can't think of a reason why they would have to abandon Trash2? I can think of many, all related to losing control of the code. I've had plugins where the dev told me the stories about how they lost control of the code and had to abandon the product. Example: barratt audio Equavescent, one of the nicest sounding EQ's I've ever heard. RIP There are many other examples, Camel and LinPlug come to mind. ...and other reasons why a company might lose control of their products code. Software is tricky business and the ins-and-outs of it are not common knowledge which opens up risks for customers.

It doesn't make sense from a logistics standpoint to keep older products that are 10 years old with very old code and unresolvable bugs around.

Tech debt is a real problem and I can believe that products needed to be dropped eventually.

But offering 1 year support to people who only just bought them? It might be in the EULA but certainly wasn't in the advertising copy. This could have been handled more transparently; those discounts for the last couple of years could have been branded as a "no-more-updates sale" the way Linplug wound down their stuff.

Of course the other sweetener would be an upgrade path... I guess there won't be a Trash 3? Sucks to lose it at the same time as Absynth when they were two of the few options available for waveshaping with really silly transfer functions. Can anyone recommend a modern "WAV as waveshaper" plugin?

They're still CR though aren't they? I just install though the portal thingy so assume there's some element of contacting their server.

That's what I'd be more afraid of. I've worked in software dev and appreciate there comes a time you can't just prop up older code, staff turnover etc. If they're not making money on Trash, say, anymore then I can see them not spending considerable resource on maintaining it, devs are expensive. But if it still works on your system then removing CR etc would be the way to go. As Adobe did with CS2, old and unsupported but they turned the keys over to the users so at least they weren't standing in the way. I'm of the opinion that you can't moan about an old program failing to work on a system that's been upgraded beyond it's recommended specs. They'll have a responsibility laid out in the EULA and maybe here there's arguments for how they've done this but I don't think it's fair to expect neverending support (unless they promised that, has anyone?)

you can pop an authorisation for the older plugins onto an iLok dongle and use that, which might provide a bit more longevity.

as native instruments showed, what's in the EULA has little effect on what actually happens: they were meant to provide a permanent key if they switched off c/r. they didn't.

the good news with izotope is that the machine authorisation does work with their current portal system so while that's still what they use, there should be a fair amount of life in the c/r system assuming izotope stays in business and isn't just stripped for parts by fransisco partners.

Well... all of these have been available at bargain bucket prices like $9.99 for some years - it's not that much of a surprise if you ask me.

Should work fine on windows for many years to come. Seems fairly reasonable to me.

They are probably reducing the portfolio so they can offer a single, more cohesive, subscription service across PA, NI and Izotope... I would probably do the same - work out a core portfolio, reset and start making choices from there.

Trash 1 & 2, Iris 1 & 2 especially i use a lot... oh and stutter edit, seems time has come to sort out these stupid online only authorized vsts
