iZotope discontinues many plugins (iZotope and Exponential Audio)

Well... all of these have been available at bargain bucket prices like $9.99 for some years - it's not that much of a surprise if you ask me.

Not much of a surprise to KVR veterans, but I don't see how newcomers would be expected to know this.

Onward with better tools and better companies to do business with... you have to learn to walk way from losses on software purchases - its the nature of the beast. IMHO YMMV

Plexuss what software did you go to when you stopped using RX6 Advanced? I am also on RX6 Advanced and haven't quite found an alternative ( haven't upgraded either as it is meeting my needs as is) . I use pretty much all the processors including the spectral repair stuff. Appreciate any insights you have.

Basically in layman terms, it means you can't upgrade your O/S and expect it to continue to work, be supported or registered in the future. Which equates to the comparison above.

If you buy a plugin today you are not guaranteed software updates going into the future. The only somewhat of an exception to this rule are software subscriptions because they operate more like an ongoing service.

Annoying isn't it. 2 of my favourite games - Tomb Raider 4 (the one set in Ancient Egypt) and Broken Sword 4 - Hidden Dragon - are frustratingly more or less the only versions of those games that were not ported to other platforms so I can't play them anymore unless I buy another first gen Xbox

You're just making a stronger case for Wave's WUP as mentioned above.

is there some info if these will be not activatable in future like NI's Service Center Dilemma? E.g. buying a new pc, crash of the old hardware or whatever and the plugins are lost?

Software businesses are like sports teams. Lose a star player or two, and the team
starts losing more often. If a team player becomes an addict, or suffers some mallady,
productivity suffers. I imagine people in the coding community could name the
'allstar coders' who changed companies, or had a bad experience, and how those companies performed in the aftermath. And how related competing products are faring in the marketplace.

No, there is still no additional information. In fact, I've yet to see an official email statement (via mail). So this is "breaking" as we speak (aka: spreading through word of mouth).


At this point, there is legit nothing to defend the company in question. IMHO and all that. A statement with "10 year old code" is just nonsense. "Code not being recoverable" (as it happened with Linplug or Native Instruments Absynth), is a completely different topic, and we need to differentiate here. To my understanding, the devs that created things like Trash 2 or all the Exponential Audio tools, are still with the company. And if not, they (as in iZotope) actually have(!) the code at hand.

Not wanting to continue support for M1/M2 (which is especially dicey, since Native M1 support exists since late 2020 with MacOS 11 Big Sur) and the inevitable nukage of VST2 (Steinberg hosts only for the time being), is a completely different topic. But then again, all these tools are in VST3 already -- although I've lost track on M1 support. Iris 2 was last updated in May 2021 (so after MacOS 11 Big Sur) and most Exponential Audio tools were updated in June 2022 (after MacOS 12 Monterey)... amidst the initial M1 craze. Trash 2 was sadly not updated (2019).


Another point you folks brought up, is indeed of concern... and that is the copy protection mechanic.

All Exponential Audio tools are iLok based. So they will continue to run, until somebody is like "nuke the license in the backend" (not unheard of, has happened before). So you can keep on using these tools until compatibility doesn't work out anymore. Drop in the ocean, but at least something.

The iZotope tools on the other hand.... with the "Product Portal", they're definitely C/R (Challenge Response). I haven't seen any prompt in years asking me to maybe activate on an iLok. So once the "1 year support, according to EULA" ends... what then? Exactly... you might be SOL as iZotope is no longer bound to activate your legit bought software. This leaves yet another sour aftertaste to this whole affair.

Now we know why all those products were being offered for free with purchases and sold for like 5$ or 9$ in certain sites. It's actually shameful and scammy like to continue selling a product that you know you are discontinuing soon. And please don't tell me they didn't know because they did.
