This is an interesting subject. I’m way less inclined to go with new devs these days after having wasted so much money on fly by night devs.
The sad thing is, it’s often new devs that are trying out new and interesting things, I want to support them but I’ve seen too many come and go.

I think the first question is how much should a VI be maintained, what is reasonable? for me 10 years.
I prefer products that evolve into version 2 and so the developer can have an increase in income with the update to sustain the update cycle. This has worked for DAW for more than 2 decades. But for VI very few have reached this stage, Kontakt is probably the only one with such a number of updates, Absynth had 4 but it wasn't updated for years.
Even if not many features are added I do like when synths get a version 2, a GUI refresh is very important for me to keep the usability up to more recent standards. I would have loved Massive to get that kind of refresh, add some new ZDF filters and newer effects.
But not all VI can be updated this way and it kind puts an expire date on them.

This didn't age well. Just got an email that Trash 2, Breaktweaker and Iris 2 have been discontinued. No longer for sale and will receive no more compatibility updates.Jorgeelalto wrote: Sun Jan 24, 2021 10:27 am iZotope because they probably have a large market share...

It wasn't when they started dropping it from products after previously hyping it. I was referring to events 14 years ago...martinjuenke wrote: Wed Oct 26, 2022 8:00 pmFirewire is dead and out and therefore irrelevant, sorry.

Why? Do those products work today? If they do, there is every reason to expect they will still work next year and the year after and the year after.SHall1000 wrote: Wed Oct 26, 2022 9:32 amSo today I am bumping the thread because I just found out IZotope have dropped support for R4 and Nimbus which I bought recently and Iris which I have enjoyed for a long time. More anxiety!
I don't get this mindset at all. If it works, it works. If it doesn't, you shouldn't have bought it in the first place. I couldn't care less if every developer dropped dead tomorrow, I'd keep using their stuff (and I'd save a shit tonne of money into the bargain).simmo75 wrote: Wed Oct 26, 2022 5:34 pmThis is an interesting subject. I couldn't care less. I'm using heaps of synths at the moment that haven't been updated in a decade or more. As long as they keep working, I'll keep using them. If they stop working, I'll find something else.rod_zero wrote: Wed Oct 26, 2022 7:46 pmI prefer products that evolve into version 2 and so the developer can have an increase in income with the update to sustain the update cycle.

Which is to say you have no actual reasoning behind your stance and are unable to explain it to anyone else. Just as I suspected.
