Sample Format Compatibility?

People,
How are various sample formats handled (as loaded) by the sampler?
If all samples are PCM Digital Audio, then the difference (in file format) is found within the formatting in the file header, correct?
So...if soft-sampler *A* loads format *B*...the music files aren't transformed in any way...the header is (right?)
The sampler loads the files & reconstructs the header for compatibility?
Thanks,

Most likely a sampler converts everything into its own native internal format. For this it indeed uses the header info. That holds the bit depth, sampling frequency, number of channels (mono/stereo/3d) and (optional) position of the loop points.
Why do you ask?

C00kie,
Thanks,

I just wanted to be sure that the audio data itself was not altered in any way. (That; & curiosity as to how it works.)why do you ask?
Thanks,

All samplers will end up with the samples as floats internally at some some stage. Some will convert in advance, some on the fly. I doubt any would loose sample information.mark4man wrote: I just wanted to be sure that the audio data itself was not altered in any way.
Don't forget that just changing the pitch is a big and complex "conversion" task which most samplers do as you play.
