Sustain pedal?

I have a sustainpedal for my midicontroller. When playing piano. It either goes all on or all off, no inbetween values. Is this how a real sustain pedal works on a piano? I would think there is middle position and everythin else between on and off. I hope you understand.

Yeah, that's how MIDI sustain pedals typically work. They are basically MIDI on/off switches (MIDI CC value 0 or 127, I believe) for the sustain parameter. I'm not aware of any pedals that send intermediate values, but I believe that would only be half of the equation. The other half is that the piano module/synth would have to support MIDI CC values between 0 and 127 for the sustain parameter.

Just to clarify, I'm only going on my own experiences and knowledge. There may be modules and pedals that support intermediate values that I'm not aware of, so hopefully other people will reply. The same question has crossed my mind before as well.

I think that’s right too. I’ve got a foot switch going into Push 2 (1st port iirc) and that works as a sustain pedal (something I’ve only just realised I could do and it’s great). We’ve got an old Yamaha Clavinova that has 3x pedals & midi out. That gave the same messages in Ableton’s Midi Monitor (0/127) when I used the sustain pedal.

Some real pianos do have "half-pedal".
Sustain pedals do exist with continuous control value instead of being just a momentary switch. But there's hardly any support in hardware & software. Compatibility is an issue, don't buy something and expect it works with everything.

As has already been mentioned, there are some pedals with half-pedal options. I have a Yamaha FC3. It's pretty neat to check out. In reality, though, I only use it for on/off. I'm not playing music that requires the feature. This ability is also dependent on whether or not the instrument responds to this feature. I bought the pedal because my Yamaha keyboard's built-in piano responds to half-pedal and I was curious to check it out. As I build up my piano VIs, I find some of them respond to this as well.
