Surge XT The Sonic Transformation

Surge XT is currently a joke in my opinion, the UI gets bigger and bigger and no person on earth can learn it. The learning curve is just too high and it's not user friendly. More features will be added with NO attention to user friendliness...
I tried to explain that on github but I get banned when I tell my opinion honestly. So it's time for action!

I'm working on Surge PRO, the ultimate version of Surge which has a standard (for beginners) and advanced mode.
It will be a synth using following synthesis techniques (and more will follow)

- subtractive
- additive
- FM
- Wavetable

All current feature Surge XT has will be added but the UI will be completely rewritten with user friendliness in mind.
The UI is made using QT 6 so OpenGL can be used for real-time waveforms.
It will run on win/mac/linux.

If you want to test BETA version, please send me a message.
A website will be made later.

No, Surge XT is the best Open Source synth and software development team. Period.

That said, let's see what you can do.....

Thank you for being willing to support Linux! :)

(Also: I'm Accused of lying about Linux—it boots, runs my pro audio workflow, stays stable, updates--though yearly dismissed as “niche”. Yet I'm the deluded one.)

it's true, i had to relocate to the moon to learn it.
the moon cheese really is something different!

I DM'ed synthriffsbabe about the "beta." "She" got triggered when I assumed it was a fork, because they claimed it was going to be done from scratch. Shame on "her" for calling the Surge developers "losers" and the code "shit." When I said "Enough with your cocky attitude. Show us you can prove it. Have a nice day, sir," "she" expelled me from the "beta" and shouted, "I AM A WOMAN." Don't listen to whoever that troll is.

To be honest, I do find the interface of Surge quite overwhelming and hard to navigate. That made me even quit the Surge-OSC-round, although I initially was looking forward to it. So I see a point in a slimmed down surface.

We do have plans for a "player mode", akin to how Alchemy had it. https://github.com/surge-synthesizer/surge/issues/6225

And we are tackling a lot of the problems of the current UI (audio path not represented very well, some things being positioned in unexpected places) in XT2. It's going to be a lot of work.

However, one thing needs to remain clear. One of the main ideas behind Surge is to offer as many synthesis features as possible with tabbing reduced to absolute minimum. This is why there is a cockpit of parameters on the front panel. This is something that will NOT change in XT2. But it WILL be laid out in a way more sensical way, that flows better. The great things will stay great (for example, the modulation system and the way it operates).

Oh and just as an aside. If anyone starts using abusive and abrasive language (especially under the guise of opinions and "I know better" appeal to authority, with throwaway GitHub accounts created and no repositories ever forked or pull requests submitted...) anywhere in the Surge community, be it our Discord server or GitHub issue tracker, there is zero tolerance for such behavior. This should be an expected outcome, not something to be confused about why one ended up banned. You damn well know why.

I'm very grateful for this. Not just another simplistic synth.

Just for context - the user above got banned after issuing an all caps obscenity laden set of physical threats on a github issue about whether the ADSR envelope should have sliders or drag points on a visual representation. We’ve closed more than 6000 github issues or pull requests so far and this is the first time we’ve had to use the github ban function in the project.

I’m not sure who the person is but I wish them well in their journey and hope they can find their way to a healthy and productive place. That place is not currently the surge project though.

Right, here is about surge, other type of doctors should be involved there...

I appreciate that SurgeXT is no fast-food synth. At certain places on our planet people can't go to school. So why should I complain? I have to do some SurgeXT homework. Yes. But in return I get a feature rich instrument. I see that as my contribution to this project.

Yeah!

I actually think the critique that the UI is kinda clunky looking is a valid one and it is definitely daunting to newcomers. We have plans to fix that one day, but we are volunteers you know! And it's really really actually very hard work.

That being said, i think Surge is a synth that once you master it is a very quick and expressive sound design tool. Just that's a bit of a hill to climb.

Whatever synthriffsbabe's own behavior may be, that does not justify gender-based verbal abuse. Whatever her gender may be, whether she is a troll simply lying about it or not, has zero relevance to the situation. So keep it to yourself, yeah?

Yeah, I should not have reached out to them to begin with.

Has anyone successfully ever made a plugin in Qt. If Qt was a viable option I don't think frameworks like JUCE and iPlug would be built.

I specifically remember (but my memory is nothing to make executive decision on) reading somewhere that Qt's event loop might be a can of worms in an audio plugin context.
