The modulation in Pigments 3 is terrific...
Seems that even MassiveX loses in this regard. Though Spire has its own deep capabilities and can compete with the market giants IMO

some synths like uhe, omni, softube have a great base sound and anything you do with it sounds good, they have big sweet spots, others like the grid or reaktor have quite a neutral starting point but they can do so much that with a lot of experimenting its possible to get it to sound sonically as good/interesting or more so than those other sweet-spot synths, but it takes a lot more work and time, and its not easy, most things you do in a modular end up sounding like shit for a while

Avenger by Vengeance Producer Suite sounds awesome !

I've tried a lot of soft synths, all the obvious ones. Massive X sounds the best of the big wavetable synths but my favourite are the component modelled ones from Softube and Gforce. For what I like, Softube Modular is the best sounding.

I also highly recommend OP-X Pro II, Messiah (Windows only), TAL-MOD, Softube Model 84, and Saurus 3.

i know there are many Synth vs. Synth and whos better type of threads. However if you ONLY hear for the pur capability/sound of a Synths Oscillator/Sound Quality without looking at features what would the top ten look like?

Didn't read all the responses, but you'd have to do it by category.
For example - an additive oscillator usually doesn't make a convincing analogue emulation, and vice-versa.

Electra 3 by Tone2 best sounding vst synth ever !

Does it help knowing a synth may sound great if you don't like using it? There's quite a lot of "best" sounding synths, and many of them I don't want to use relative to others.

My current favorites: Model 84, Twin3, Opal, Repro-1.

I've sold or deleted quite a few that others would consider "best" because they weren't best to use for me (e.g., Omnisphere, Diva, etc.). I have several others installed that aren't my favorite to use but sound great (e..g, Model 82, DiscoveryPro, Phoscyon, Hive2, SEM, and several more).

Best is all relative, of course, but I’ve been going though all my analog style plugins looking for the one that will replace my Prophet REV2 (have to sell it to make room for a Hydrasynth Deluxe) and I was surprised at how amazing Cypher 2 sounds, especially when you beat on it with FM, oscillator FM, per voice distortion, osc sync, high resonances, etc. Sweet and clean all the way up the keyboard. The per voice distortion sounds better than RePro’s (though Urs mentioned he’s got a plan to make that better) It gets ignored because it hasn’t been updated in a while, but it’s clearly still out in front as one of the best analog emulations out there. If you consider all it does, it’s maybe the best.

I just got rid of Hydrasynth unless you are getting it for the poly AT or interface or whatever I would rethink. Sonically not very interesting when compared to VSTs and REV2 is bettered by Diva for sure.

I prefer the sounds of Icarus and Gladiator though.

My answer to OP is .... System 8 by Roland since it has a VST version too. Big lush and rich sound.

And Harmor is not only the additive synth with the best CPU/sound ratio but also one of the best-sounding digital synths ever! Shame it's abandoned too. That's why I also have Gladiator, which is Warlock on expert mode.

I am fine with working with plugins like Icarus and Hive, but the Hydra has a few neat things like PWM ASM (a special kind of FM) and mixing ANY sound source (including noise) for the ring modulator. The per-voice and step modulators seem cool af! Tim Shoebridge recently did a short demo showing how the Hydra can do a cool Rhodes sound.
