JP8000 supersaw...some questions

I was bored so I made non-scientific test - ran few synths into one of their good sounding filters (fully open LP), into Pro-Q3 > Valhalla Plate
identical proQ3 and valhalla settings.
8bar loop
Zebra, ZebraCM, Diva, Hive, Alchemy and Bazille (not in that order), then last 4 are Zebra, Diva, Hive and Alchemy with as much as technically possible Unison. (Hive 2x16 + sub OSC, Diva 6x stack, Zebra 4x OSC with 11 unison, Alchemy with all 4 OSCs 16x unison)

Making a supersaw in bazille is a pain in the ass tho.
Hive is the fastest, diva is the 2nd fastest but the 6x stack makes your cpu go

Wish i haven't sold all synths lol, so i could throw so more into the mix
Not that i need more than 5 flavours of supersaw in my life

edit: changed link, added Zebralette - surprisingly fast and good Supersaw, no filter tho. Last 4 the same.

I wouldn't worry too hard about what sounds the most like the roland. Other than being in a neat package, it was not so special. In all my years of synth diddling, I've never seen a jp8000 used for much more than a live synth. Most of the big saw chords and leads were coming out of Novation stuff back then. I did have one for a short while, but I was able to swap it out for an AN1x and a CS1x which gave me way more mileage. Try V-Station if you want some big ol dirty saws.
If not then you won't beat diva for a software JP8000 supersaw.

[/quote] Yeah no ...the jp 8000 and 8080 were used for hundreds of trance and dance productions so not sure what youre smoking....the closest emulation of the jp8000 is the roland sh201 which is the very last production synth roland made with an actual dedicated supersaw oscillator and it had 2 of them so the supersaw was twice as fat as the JP's . The jp6k is a better emulation than diva with a closer filter sound.

Thats not quite true. The JP8000 and JP8080 both had an upper and lower layer, so essentially two JPs in one, and in performance mode, you can activate each layers Super Saw with different settings to make them more fat. The JP8080 also has unison, and combining that with the two Super Saws made it extremely fat

Thats not quite true. No, each layer had 1 Super Saw, so when you enable performance mode, you get 2x Super Saw. The JP8080 had 10 polyphony, so when you enable the Unison it activates all the voices and detunes them, so it will be a mono 10 voice unison synth. So in total 2x Super Saw, (thats 2x 7 saws), times 10 is 140 saws at the same time. Pretty fat to me

The jp6k is the closest Ive come across in plugs to emulate the jp supersaw....the trick i found is to use a chorus and the TAL free chorus specifically setting #2 at 25 % really sounds like the roland chorus ....as for the sh 201 it has TWICE the supersaws as the jp and also has an upper/lower setting which will give you a total of 4 supersaw layers . The Jp is a little cleaner than the sh 201 but the 201 definitely has that roland supersaw sound thats hard to mimic . Sunrizer is amazing at everything other than the supersaws which i find it to be thin compared to the jp6k . Adam it would be awesome if you put a chorus/reverb on it as well as some other waveforms. The JP 8080 is a popular synth on Reverb advertizing for upwards of 3 grand right now .

Well... Of course you must hav missed a lot of huge tracks... See here for some of them, plus how great the sound is.



This guy is a real synth wizard, but you can see his other video of Diva trying to make the same sounds... And it's only close in a few places.

Now, I get that there are many 'modern' superstar sounds. But not that many get where the jp8000/8080 does imo.

Yes, I figured that much as well, but unfortunately its not as simple as that, there are some other funky things going on which I need to understand more. I did write an email to Urs, asking about any tips since they have a feedback osc in Diva, but got no reply. I am guessing they are very busy.

Unfortunately the original dev of that code left us years ago, I would have to study it to know what's going on.
