I present you with the December 2004 Alternate Contest:

Oblique Bleak Night
DARKNESS in the Season of LIGHTS...

Approach it this way: you're scoring a movie set in the holiday season, but it's *not* a happy script. It can be a suicidal, alcohol drenched drama about love and loss. It can be a glimpse into a dystopian future or post-apocalyptic setting and how the survivors might celebrate or mourn the season. It can even be a horror flick or action thriller where a madman is on the loose, donning a jolly red costume and bringing DEATH to all the girls and boys...

The key is to use the usual holiday tropes and cliches, but *twist* them to your own hope-destroying ends. Use samples from Christmas songs, modified lyrics, quotes from holiday movies, or even narrate or create a small radio play scene about the lack of cheer in your version of the season.

---------

the technical rules for this month are as follows -

1 - your track MUST be -

(!) BASED UPON HOLIDAY TROPES, CLICHES, OR SAMPLES

(a) encoded in .mp3 or .ogg format at 128kbps or lower
(b) no longer than 2 minutes running time
(c) named with the artist and track names in the filename! pHz likes this format: month-year-artistname-tracktitle. I prefer: year_month_artist_track. TRY to stick to something like that. also, you should AT LEAST have the artist and title fields of the MP3/OGG ID tags completed (both these requirements PREFERRED, but we'll be nice if you vary slightly: it's just easier to handle lots of entries when you provide all the identifying info!)
(d) composed using at least some plugin instruments or effects
(e) entered into the contest by posting a DIRECT link in this RULES & SUBMISIONS thread (use the GOSSIP thread for everything else)
(f) submitted before the deadline: 11:59:59pm on Friday December 31, 2004 on the International Dateline, the last second of 2004 anywhere on Earth! Note that this deadline is later than usual to allow for a busy season and all possible vacation time!

2 - your track SHOULD be -

(a) composed specifically for this contest
(b) original material / remix / or hybrid in any style

3 - only one entry per person - no resubmissions without permission from the moderator

4 - any tracks not adhering to these rules will be strictly disqualified

5 - voting (non-participating voters must have at least 20 posts to vote) will run from the submission deadline until midnight on friday 7th january 2005 - anyone voting for themselves will find ALL their votes disqualified - any entrants NOT VOTING will also be disqualified (have to vote to win!)

6 - prizes this month so far ...

...NONE! If you are a Developer feeling some charity in this season, please PM me with details about what you'd like to donate to the prize pool! :)

Otherwise, I'll have to offer my traditional "Custom-designed contest t-shirts to the Top 3 winners".

Cover from The Pogues - Fairytale Of New York

One of my favorite "sad dark" Christmas songs. I couldnt resist to cover it, I hope thats ok by the rules. If not, well I had fun playing it anyway

Imagine the happy family sitting around the table, but there is an awkward silence all evening and at the end of Christmas Eve, mom and dad are both so drunk they start insulting each other, and the kids are crying etc.. etc..

Happy Christmas ! :hihi:
Ok, my signature picture was too big, out of protest, this is the non-picture version of my signature

Post

And another cover...
The Vandals wrote:Christmas is hell on earth, I know nothing worse
than being depressed and told to be happy
The season of suicide, I know why they died
Christmas reminds me I have nothing
I've got no girl, there's only me - no friends or family
another Christmas alone
Got no food to eat, no ornaments or wreath
so I'll hang myself from the tree

Christmas is dark and wet, so I can't forget
Christmas reminds me I have nothing
this is the end of hope, I won't write a note
because it would be addressed to no one

Now I will say good-bye, no one will cry
Christmas goes on without me
My life is now complete, so I'll go to sleep
Forever and ever and ever...
As if there weren't enough misery in this song already, I put :-o my voice :-o in it as well.

The song is available in two file formats:
>> 1.6MB Ogg Vorbis file << | >> 1.8MB MP3 file <<

(Thanks for the hosting goes to the usual suspect ;)

Not entirely hip-hop or rap, but close enough. Here is my Xmas blues.

Dear Santa

Sonar 4, DR008, Sonic Synth, GPO (and almost forgot my Yamaha and Santa guitars)

Minimal effects: Sonitus eq & reverb, SIR & ambience)

Oh yeah and some voice that belongs to me.

Someone has probably done this before, but oh well, it was fun:

Little Drum & Bass Boy

FLS 5, Fruity Keys, FPC, Fruity Slicer, Synth 1, Reaktor, Augur and a tiny bit of Sampletank (wanted to work on my drum programming, so no supatrigga)
And all life's fears
Can invade my ears
I can handle it

A bit of Xmas cheer for you all... describing my experience of Christmas over the last few years. :D

Mary Mother of Jesus! They're back!!!! Celebrating that most pagan of Christmas ingredients with a tale of...

Nutmeg Pscychosis

...also been valued as an aphrodisiac; the Indians used it to combat asthma and heart complaints and still use it as a sedative. Nicholas Culpeper (1616-54), the famous English herbalist, attributes to nutmeg the capacity to induce sleep delirium. William Salmon, on the other hand, said that the oil of mace or nutmegs, if rubbed on the genitals, excited sexual passion (thereby echoing the Arabs' use of its aphrodisiac qualities). Nutmeg also was seen as having magical properties and is one of the ingredients of a magical perfume described in the most famous of all....

Not too proud of this, but wtf...

This is a Louden Wainwright song that is originally done live with just him and his guitar. I added all kinds of parts and left out all kinds of lyrics (also changed all but one of the chords to minor).

Sorry for the sloppiness folks, but it's all one-takes and I was getting a little tipsy :drunk: during the process. I am pretty happy with the mix though, at least until I get some decent monitors and I can hear all the crap in there. :-o

Suddenly It's Christmas

This is my musical vision of a society of robots celebrating XMAS, frantically shopping and milling about in their organized robotic manner, large bundles of gifts in robotic grips wheeling, wheeling to the sound of XMAS Muzak. Not bleak, but mechanical and seasonally consistent. As is their wont.
