Jack Audio Connection Kit - Anyone?

I just recently downloaded and installed this on Windows 10: https://github.com/jackaudio/jackaudio.github.com/wiki
I was looking for a way to route audio between Ableton and Reaper without the restrictions of ReWire / ReaRoute -- and it seems to be doing a good job.
However, documentation is a bit sparse, or rather incomprehensible to a non-programmer and/or Linux buff.
I just wondered if anyone here has experience of using it?
I've been using the patchbay to create connections... My main question at the moment is why it seems I can only create 4 in/out plugs... it seems this is a hard-coded limitation of the virtual driver, but I wonder why, since they are virtual "channels", shouldn't it be possible to create as many as I like?

Took me a while to figure this out when I was testing JACK between Reaper and Bitwig.
The default number of channels is defined in c:\program files\jack\jack-router\win64\jackrouter.ini file

No, no... it's no easier even if you've been using *nix since the '90s and I started with Jack years and years ago. I moved to Windows mostly because of it! I try it on and off but the documentation is where it's let down for sure. Does seem to work with the latest build (at last!).AudioBabble wrote: Fri Nov 04, 2022 1:21 pmHowever, documentation is a bit sparse, or rather incomprehensible to a non-programmer and/or Linux buff.

Thanks for the replies... in the intervening time, I've managed to figure out a fair bit.
Have figured out how to make channels route to where I want them...
One of the most fickle aspects is that it seems you have to start the DAWs first, then start Jack, then select the jack drivers in each DAW.
Can't seem to do much with MIDI routing, but I have LoopMIDI and Midi Ox for that.
Last piece of the puzzle is MIDI sync, preferably Midi Clock rather than Timecode as Ableton will be looping while Reaper records linearly... found Pure Data patch Live2Reaper, which ALMOST works, in fact it did work the very first time I used it, but now it fails to make either DAW start - very frustrating!

That only works with native Jack connections to the DAW. Using JackASIO only gets you an ASIO connection. IIRCAudioBabble wrote: Sat Nov 05, 2022 12:43 amCan't seem to do much with MIDI routing, but I have LoopMIDI and Midi Ox for that.

Depends how happy you feel using each host for its strengths. Why not?

"Why not", indeed, if that sort of Linux like problem solving is what you like. Personally, I would use Live for its ability to create pattern type music and then export the stems into reaper for finishing. If the OP wanted to use Live for its ability to clip launch live, then just use Live, that's what it was designed for, anything else is going to be clunky and unworkable. On the other hand, if someone just wanted to record in a linear fashion, then do it in Reaper. If you want to combine the best of Live and Reaper into one, then maybe buy Bitwig.

Yup.. you pretty much guessed it, I'm seeking to use Ableton's live looping / clip launching capabilities alongside Reaper's strengths in just about every other area... just my humble opinion but it seems there's nothing you can't do or customize in Reaper... even the clip launching aspect is being pretty well addressed as we speak by the Playtime add-on, but it's not quite up to scratch yet (Playtime 2 is coming soon though).
So, for now I want to run Ableton simply as a loop station effectively, feeding unprocessed midi and audio through to Reaper and let Reaper do all the heavy lifting of plugins/effects/instruments.
Also thinking it would be interesting to integrate this kind of setup for NINJAM sessions with other musicians, something I know @pljones is more than a little familiar with!
Just added the final piece of the puzzle in getting Reaper and Abelton in sync, thanks to the Reaper forum: https://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=254027 - works like a charm!

Have you considered just using Reaper tools?
Look into Super 8, Playtime, and Nambla Looper.
If that's not sufficient, look into Giada as a cross platform all in one stand alone loop workstation.

Great suggestions, all of which I hadn't heard of, except playtime... I will go forth and check them out
