If I spend more than a week or so, I'm almost guaranteed to mess them up one way or another. I get an idea, crank it out and if it doesnt work, move on to the next one. Served me well so far

It depends. It may be 3 days or 20 years.

Last one was a track I started in 2015. :)

Its always such, I listen to them later after release and "Oh crap I should've EQ'd that one better. That part hasnt got enough volume" etc.

Such is life :)

30 hours is about average. When learning the genre 30-50 hours.

Years.

Normally about 6 months, with several on the go at once, but much like others have said, I too work full time, so when it's broken down into total hours per song, maybe something like 30 hours? Normally 80% of it happens immediately in like the first day/2 or 3 hours... then it takes ages to "finish" it.

Post

I'd never contemplate declaring something finished unless I'd spent at east 6months with it. The more time you spend with it, the better it gets but you eventually reach the point where you're just shuffling deckchairs and that's when you know it's ready. Notice I said "ready", not "finished" because it will always change again over time, as we prep it for live performances or try out new instruments in existing songs.

A few hours because MIDI based production.
Many paid and free VSTs as well as Kontakt libraries. As well as HW synths/drum machine and acoustic instruments.

Usually 1-2 weeks. Any longer than that and I know the song isn’t inspiring enough so I drop it.

Post

Honestly, some times an hour, sometimes weeks, more longer than shorter though... Longest I have taken is 3 months, well I actually changed the drums and key to get lows in at an acceptable level that can be heard without clipping and to get clarity from other layers.

Maybe something's just not quite right with a piece, and it's not clear what would remedy it, so it gets put aside. Then a particular tool gets invented in this dynamic market, which fits the bill very nicely, and then in retrospect it's obvious what was wrong.
Every day takes figuring out all over again how to f#ckin’ live.

Then again, maybe not.
