Hi folks. I am the lead producer of a newly launched podcast called 'Everyday Climate Champions', a production of the Climate Reality Project - Bay Area Chapter. I'm wondering if anyone here knows of a good online community of new-ish sound designers who want to get some solid experience working on a podcast. Any leads would be much appreciated! Thanks.

We've got a community right here!

Question: what do you envision is the role of a "sound designer", specifically in the context of a podcast? What's his/her tasks & responsibilities?

Just checking, since at least to me it's not so clear. We might have very different things in mind...
We are the KVR collective. Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated. Image

what sounds is a climate podcast likely to need?
im assuming it's more chat, discussion of facts and such?

are you looking for stings for intros/outros?
or something more sfx/music for effect behind the chat?

I listen to quite a few, and there's usually a theme tune at the start and end, plus often little musical sections between different items. Depends on if it's more a 'live chat' on one topic type of thing, or a podcast with different subjects it seems.

Always going to be hard to get people to work for free.

I tried Fiverr once (following one Dash Glicth video where here discussed his experience). I paid 5 USD for two short soundtracks each, but they were nowhere near usable. The one I use for my video was actually send to me by mistake :hihi:
Perhaps you could get something better if you're willing to pay a higher amount.

You may try https://metapop.com/ , a place for music producers collaboration. Last time I checked, it was full of desperate ones hoping for anyone to listen to their creations.

I understand the request, and even that some might bite, but at the end of the day this is never an option when paying bills even for “new-ish” people.

Maybe this is a job for AI generated music since it wasn’t gonna pay anyways lol?
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

But surely you can walk into any shop and pay with the 'solid experience' you got? LOL

Without veering into the specifics of the particular politics of it, if someone feels it's for a cause they support then they may indeed do some work for free. Obviously we've not been provided with many specifics in this case thus far.

Why else do people volunteer for charities/social organisations etc? Not everything in life needs to be commodified.

It really depends on the charity... Some 'charities' (and I'm not referring to this because I don't know anything about it) pay their executives VERY well and still try to scab as much free work as they can.

Basically, just always make sure you know who and what you getting involved with and how much will be donated to actual good causes.

By law, 501 3(c) NP are required to pay their people the going rates. Your problem here is in trying to conflate "non-profit" with "pro-bono".
A suggestion I can make is to visit your local orders and clubs such as Rotary, Soroptimist, etc. where there may have a member or two willing to donate their time as a tax write off. (You technically pay them with a donation receipt even though no actual money is exchanged.)

Not pro bono, but splice has a ton of cool presets
