In theory I’d pay a MOOG premium. I’ve got ann American Vintage Fender, lovely bass and well worth the price ($1.5k) to me.
I’d be happy to pay more for a MOOG than IK or Behr.
But THAT price for a mono? Yep , for collectors, not for me.

Its definatly a collectors item at that price. I dont think the manufacturing of that thing is that expensive.

$5k is half price if you consider its original price and adjust for inflation and today's dollars. still too much for most people (me included) but it's a great synth. i hope people who do buy it do something good w/it.

Thats a nonsense saying because times change, its just not worth the price because there are better products. Like computers, laptop that cost 5k 10 years ago now is barely worth few hundreds. I would understand if it would be ireplacable, but Moog is very replacable.dayjob wrote: Fri Nov 18, 2022 4:18 pm $5k is half price if you consider its original price and adjust for inflation and today's dollars. still too much for most people (me included) but it's a great synth. i hope people who do buy it do something good w/it.

Yeah, you can't really compare that. The conditions were completely different back then. The production and availablity of parts is completely different, the budget for marketing is different, some stuff can be produce significantly cheaper these days, and wages have changed a lot.
In Germany we say "Milchmädchenrechnung".
But, to give an idea, it costs more than the used price I would get for my car.
Hey, I don't blame them. As has been said, there are surely people who pay that.
Or some people might get 19 Behringer Model D's instead.

Well, I suppose one thing this will do is kind of put the skids on flippers trying to get $8K out of the previous Reissue. Good luck with that while this is in production again.
(The last time I can remember anything like this happening is when Roland discontinued the JU-06 Boutique. Flippers were jacking up the prices and then Roland released the JU-06A and turned off the spigot on that right quick.)

yeah. i hear ya and understand that.. but saying "there are better products" doesn't apply to someone who wants a Minimoog and only a minimoog. people want what they want for reasons and will pay to get the thing if they have the money. trying to sell someone something "better" is subjective. i think the minimoog is more than the sum of its parts.. as many synths are.. but i don't want any of them really.. just saying.. people who want a minimoog aren't going to be sold a sequential circuits Pro3 or whatever.Lbdunequest wrote: Fri Nov 18, 2022 4:27 pmThats a nonsense saying because times change, its just not worth the price because there are better products. I love Moog products, and wish I could own a piece of (modernized) history like this, but I'm going to stick with Diva. It is doing everything I need for the analog flavor of synthesis. With the "analog" part well covered, my new interests are with modern digital synths with multiple oscillator engines, great filters, and lots and lots of modulations. The beauty there, is that we have that available to us as well.
Nevertheless, I'll always have a soft spot for the classics. I wish Moog the best, and hope they sell very, very well!

I think the best price comparison is to Moog's other products.
Moog One 8 Voice: $6,999
Moog One 16 Voice: $8,999
Ok this isn't a poly synth...
Subsequent 37: $1,899
Matriarch: $2,199
Grandmother: $1,249
...all assembled in the US by the same folks building this. I'm pretty sure they could've released this at $2,499, maybe $2,999 and still made a very handsome profit. The wood isn't THAT expensive. The others all feature multiple analog oscs, envelopes and ladder filters.
They can charge what they'd like. People will still buy these. But I suspect they're making incredible margins on these. I'm only annoyed because I'd really love to replace my Poly-D with a real Minimoog and $2,499-2,999 would've resulted in a buy from me. And I'd still have felt like it was expensive! (And would've still happily spent that.) So just sour grapes from me.
It's almost like they don't want to be stuck making Minimoogs (for some reason) and someone said, "screw it, if people are willing to spend $5k on old ones, that's enough that it's worth it for us to get in on that action, making something we'd rather just move entirely from."
My buddy has got a Matriarch and I love it. It's a lot of fun and a lot more versatile than the Minimoog. And in my price range. I should just stick with that. But the Mini was definitely a lust item.

$5k just to play progrockjazz wankery. I don't think I've ever seen a video of any MiniMoog where they don't end up playing progrockjazz wankery. Dunno what it is about Minis but they seem to predispose to playing shite. Expensive shite.

The Minimoog is/was used in loads of genres.

Yeah, used everywhere from Madonna to Dr. Dre to Parliament...still used today across a wide variety of genres. It's the players that make the instrument. Not the other way around.

This Model D is quite different from the Matriarch (and others) in terms of materials and construction. It is all through-hole construction. Go to the Moog website and look at the photos of the Model D circuit board to see.Funkybot's Evil Twin wrote: Fri Nov 18, 2022 5:38 pm I think the best price comparison is to Moog's other products.

No doubt matching the exact components is also more costly... and the wood really is gorgeous.
I love my Matriarch... I'd love to have one built like these Model D's... wouldn't pay the price (though I might think about it)

Non collectors of hardware synths would do well to look at the Roland SE02 boutique , an enhanced MODEL D clone with full midi specs presets etc or the Behringer Model D. Through hole construction does not sound better than modern solderbath robot assembled pc boards. Sonically you lose nothing.
