Grandmother: $1,249

My buddy has got a Matriarch and I love it. It's a lot of fun and a lot more versatile than the Minimoog. And in my price range. I should just stick with that. But the Mini was definitely a lust item.

By their own pricing this should be more like 2k.

Matriarch is surely the better synth, can do everything this can do and more.

This just makes the matriarch seem like good value.

But to compare this to the SE02, or worse, IK's pushbutton minibox completely misses the point. I think that, outside of modular/semi-modular gear, we're at a place where the sound of the hardware isn't often the deciding factor to go hardware, it's the nature of the hardware as instrument.

Bah, anyway, I just agree with your perspective on this. I prefer playable instruments and, for me, playable means all of the instrument, not just the keys and mod wheels. Frankly, I think that these minimoogs will sell well because they are a solid instrument all the way through and will be for years to come. Thick circuit boards with thick lands suitable for 1/2 watt resistors and chunky soldering irons will be able to survive more than a few ham-fisted repairs. I see these to be the synth equivalent to an expensive signature Les Paul. I wouldn't pay for either, but I can see the appeal for those interested.

I think it's fair to compare these to an se02, or the behr. Similar functionality and sound.

Definitely though the (hopefully) extra care in building, repairability, more playable instrument factors all need to be taken into account. Comparing to a premium les Paul or fender seems about right.

There are of course diminishing returns at this price level.

Seems overpriced but I'm sure for people gigging with a vintage one it makes sense to replace with a new one, and if the previous reissues actually have been selling for more... Then it could be said moog are doing the right thing and allowing people to purchase from a reliable source instead.

I'd go with a matriarch over this though.

They might be missing an add-on market here. For only $399 you can get your Rick Wakeman authorized cape; for $699 you get the bedazzled signature version.
