In the plugins I have I'm not seeing exactly what I'm looking for, or probably I have one that has the feature but I'm not sure how to use it.

I just want to be able to set an automatic panning feature so an instrument track will move left to right by the specifics/parameters I set for it. I don't know what specifically you would call that, what effect type that would be, but I'd like something basic that can do that.

I always see flangers and phasers and get that confused with panning, but those seem to effect more frequency shifting rather than stereo panning.

An auto-panner is what you're looking for ... I think there are a few free one's out there now. Maybe check out Audio Damage Panstation. https://www.audiodamage.com/pages/free-and-legacy or Panagement by Auburn Sounds. https://www.auburnsounds.com/products/Panagement.html There's a free version.

Bought this when first released. It's a great auto-panner/tremolo.

Otherwise, you could use DAW automation - especially if it's clip based, like FL Studio.

EDIT: And I should add that, these are amazing freebies. I said it when they made this collection free to all but it's worth repeating. They are still worth the money I spent at the time but I'm glad Audio Damage released them to a wider audience. I've always loved AD's perspective on business and especially copyright protection. Lots of respect for those guys.

Panflow by Audio Modern is great and free -https://audiomodern.com/shop/plugins/panflow - and so is the free Melda one... (The whole Melda free package is kinda awesome tbh)

Edit: watch some YouTube videos on Panflow it does a lot!

You can do that without any plugins in Live, Reaper, Reason, Bitwig, Logic and probably many more. No to pay for this. Just route an LFO to a panning effect.

Kilohearts snap-heap with the stereo snap-in gives you a ton of control for this.

and afaik any tremolo should be able to have more or less panning modulation capabilities

I'm using Mixcraft. Beginning to feel it's limitations, but only in that it seems to hit it's processing limit in heavier projects with a lot of tracks with multiple plugins on each track. I've read on there forum that it isn't optimized the best and takes more cpu/ram whatever. I'll probably try an alternative at some point but Mixcraft 10 is coming out beginning next year and it's possible they will make some tweaks to the overall infrastructure.

Is it ever common to use auto panning on drum tracks? That's what I'm using it to mess around with and so far I like the results. Everything but the kick I have autopanned to different measures. It swirls I like it

I am not sure if it is common or not, but I used Audiority's Tube Modulator as a panner for some percussion elements on this track. They originated as old Optotron loops, and I cleaned them up with downward expansion to cut perceivable "fuzz" and pare them back to crisper percussion sounds, then used Tube Modulator and some delay to give them the movement character I wanted.
