EvilDragon wrote: Fri Nov 11, 2022 8:28 pm Modulation in Surge is executed in buffers of 32 samples and linearly interpolated within that. That may be the cause here. This is also one of the reasons that make Surge quite CPU efficient despite huge amounts of modulation. Other synths you have listed may instead be doing per sample modulation, which would absolutely explain the difference. The envelopes themselves are quite bog-standard/nothing special about them. It's just exponential curves, really.

Our new VCV rack modules (in beta currently) process modulation in 8 sample blocks, so you might wanna try them and see if they behave closer to what you would expect. We're probably going to reduce the modulation processing block size for Surge XT 2.0 - to 16 or 8, time will tell.
Great news EvilDragon! Thank you and the team and, of course, Claes!

Huge thanks to EVERYONE who has voted for Surge XT in KvR's 2022 poll! We have reclaimed our crown from last year's winner, Vital (which entirely deserved it for 2021 - of course)!

It is so comforting that people are constantly recognizing the efforts from everyone at Surge Synth Team - it absolutely gives meaning to everything we did, we do, and plan to do in the future. Onwards and upwards!
Seconded! Thanks everyone!

Other way round:

Thanx for y'all SurgeXT guys and gals for your cool work so that I have the fun to use this great synth, for free.

Yeah, congrats to the team and thanks for Surge, it’s honestly very handy for us people with slow computers and the fact that it’s free is just crazy. I’m sure Shortcircuit will be even more welcome, since the aren’t many samplers for free.

As for the envelope, I found out that in Vital the Attack is not finishing at 0.
Just as a small clarification here, Vital's attack envelope doesn't extend "outside" of zero. It just has a default value of slightly more. You can see that if you right-click > enter value:

Turning to the left just brings it all the way down to zero (which causes clicks).

I'm not seeing a much of difference in the attack phase (A set to zero):

You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

BTW The twist oszillator contains an analog kick engine (but non of the kick presets is using this). :clown:

Hi Chris! Do you have presets for you samples? I would load them and checked too. Thanks.

It's just the init saw preset with amp attack set to zero. Note played is G6. One cycle of the saw's is 0.65 ms.

Have you tried a sinewave?

Post

If the sine wave is retrigger on and unison 1 it will start from phase 0. Turn off the retrigger and the initial phase will randomize. Thst may help

Check my samples a few pages back. Non of the Surge XT examples had a solid fast attack. And it is not related to the phase at all. My samples were made with the retrigger on (not sure about the the unison voice, it could be two though, which is default)

Ok, I found out, that there is nothing to do with the attack of the main Envelope. If switched to the Analog Envelope, then it has a proper fast and natural attack, as you pointed out there.
Basically, just like EvilDragon pointed out earlier, the reason is the modulation, which he explained well in his post.

Folks, Surge XT modules for VCV Rack are now officially included in the rack library!

Have at it, and whatever you do, don't forget to make it fun!
