This was recorded from a tune using the YM2610 (OPNA) chip. (Emulated recording.) First is the song, next is the same part with just the bass sound.

I've noticed on the player I've used, the channel this sound was on, seemed to be undergoing a lot of changes in realtime, as if it may be changing some kind of parameter between notes on this passage.

Anyone could care to shed some light for me on this? I'd like to recreate this sound.

PS: No I don't have an MDX (YM2151/OPM-compatible for use with VOPM) file for this.

I got the same sound (slap bass) in the FM7 and if you play a little bit around with the mod wheel it sounds very similar.

I'm quite interested in its mechanics, or is it part of the factory DX7 set or somewhere else? If so do you have a sysex of it, maybe I could "try" deconstructing using Hexter or something.. I'm particularly interested in OSCs used, their pitch ratios, envelopes and routing.

Yep it's part of the factory set of the DX7!

Can't provide a sysex-file but you'll find many of them on the web.

It's really just a basic patch with mod wheel going to the pitch envelope.

Are you able to provide a screenshot of the patch routing/settings of this patch with your FM7? I'm finding Hexter quite difficult to read from.

As you can see it's really just pitching, so you can move the pitch bend fastly too to get this sound.

Where? I can "Hear" the sound, but I'd like to know what the schematics look like.

Also, that mp3 sounds too weak in comparison to the one in my example, but I think I can figure out from using the one you have as a starting point...now for a visual screenshot please.

Hmm. I can see the modwheel mapped to pitch, that doesn't tell me much. (I do that to all patches I make anyway.)

Sorry to be a pain, but the OPERATOR A to F settings I'm more interested in.

Hm the slap bass is really a standard preset in every FM synth... i'm sure he is available for Helix too ("...Helix comes with over 800 presets...").

That's kinda the idea. :P I'm just in the mood of replicating it and recreate it as close as possible with Helix. I've only had a few successful replications, them being really simple sounds and one complicated bass patch. (which has a different timbre mind you.)

It may be standard, but this particular one piqued my interest.

Hey! A bit late (14 years 0_0), I'm also a very big fan of Ryu Umemoto's grooves by the way. Here's how I got a decent sound:

First, filter and keymap the more you go up the more you lowpass (C5 shouldn't have much trebles). And a very short decay with a good bump in the sound (maybe sustain 20%, really low to have a click) for all operators.
Add the first 5 or so harmonics to OP1, and others high up in the 60's to the waveform. It's not a full saw but also not a simple sine.

OP2 is 4 octave higher and modulates a bit, this u can mess with. This one adds more high end piercing.
OP3 at 26x rate of OP1, and this one modulates the OP2. This adds some "metal", percussiveness.

The two next ones are optional, but adds good stuff:
OP4 at ~40x rate of OP1, modulates OP2. This one adds some edge and sharpness.
OP5 with 30-40x rate of OP1, modulates OP1 at low volume. This adds more "roundness" or warmth.

This makes the basic FM slap sound we all love! Now you can mess around with the stuff, i'm sure Ryu Umemoto might have used less operators, I don't know the capabilities of YU-No's soundcard, i think this is where you should start looking. And you might want to use Genny VSTi, this is a wonderful Megadrive Genesis YM2612 and SN76489 chips.

The gist of it is basically that you want a filter, a pitch and volume big attack, and a sine with some of the base harmonics (maybe dephase them a bit). And then add a 2x or 4x modulator, and modulate this one until it sounds good with very high ratios.
