I've been baffled by this as well. We tend to assume that Barricade would be used only on the master out, which wouldn't require what dupont is wanting. But even I use Barricade at the tail end of my vocal chain, and to adjust my final volume, I use the fader. However, if Barricade had an "out" option like Reelbus or even E.Q.4, you could use that instead of your fader. Maybe that's what dupont is asking about?

I think it's more the A/Bing that dupont wants - that output gain, post limiting, in Barricade would make easier.

Should be easy enough to set up a control that will switch two plugins at the same time: Both Barricade and whatever is being used to control the gain after it. I'm sure Bitwig can do this and save the chain for recall elsewhere.

We might be talking about the same thing - the "outs" (which can increase or decrease volume) in Reelbus and EQ4 are post. Or maybe I'm still baffled. :ud:

That's not the point though - depending on how you use it you can end up with a much lower gain than what you send into it, without the possibility to compensate for this gain-loss within the plugin itself.

ah, so make up gain rather than additional!
that makes sense now, thanks.

Yes, exactly! Its basic architecture is actually not too different from a Neve 33609 and so it's actually a rather flexible compression-tool that you can use for a variety of quite different tasks.

It took me a while to get used to Barricade's output being the set max output level and not being like a maximizer where the output CONTROLS the output level. It's a different way of looking at the job. You can adjust where the peaks are being knocked down without changing the volume. The input gain and output level interact in such a way to accomplish any threshold and level, they just interact differently than, say, an L2, with the threshold level and output setting that moves the volume of the audio. But now that I'm used to it I find it a good way for a master brickwall to work.

Post

Yes....Barricade is the brick wall...

I have a separate fader after the sub mix that feeds Reel Bus and Barricade on the master...

It works for me 🥳
No auto tune...

Personally I never use it on the master - just on individual tracks and occassionally on busses...

Yes, I would think there are limiters that can be better adjusted for a buss or master, but when it comes to "quick, I need limiter for this track" (maybe just to prevent loud volume changes in sound design stage), Barricade is perfect.

Except for the potential gain-loss phenomenon of course, which this conversation is all about... ;-)

Post

That's what is good about this world...

Everyone is just a little bit different....

I use Barricade 4 to catch any final peaks on the master and it's not working to hard at all....

No more than 1 dB of reduction and usually none at all unless there is a touch of compression....

I don't want to wear it out 🌞
