I was still using a MOTU 828mk2 up until a couple years ago when I snagged a local 828x for $300.
Luckily that was right around the time I was getting ready to move from my Mac Pro to my current Mac mini so I never had to bother with Firewire after that.

Its older than that. The product page doesn‘t tell when it came out:
https://www.esi-audio.com/products/quatafire610/
But I have seen it mentioned in a Forum as early as 2004.
I would also always trust a MotU 828 mk1 no matter how old it is… Those interfaces have no boot time at all…; - )
They simply don‘t break! I am sure there are a lot running flawless still. If kernel support for such a device is dropped one would need to write a driver for it… But why drop a protocol if all the code is running fine already?
And as I said, there is nothing comparable on the market. I have to visit the ESI headquarters and convince them to release a USB-C version of it. And instead of Midi ports add a USB hub…

My MOTU Ultralite Mk1 (FW 400) was going strong till I just switched to M1. Dunno about FW itself but it doesn’t support the ancient Cuemix SW.

MOTU on Macs is a stellar brand. Love my new Mk 5.

I have an Ultralite Mk3 (FW 400) with a known bug in the firewire driver that when the system goes to sleep, if the interface is connected, reboot. This is as fatal a flaw as there can be in a driver. I either need to power it off or prevent the computer from sleeping. I'm not always so diligent and sometimes return to a login screen. :x

From a hardware perspective, very lovely device that should last for decades more. Sadly the software is not as bulletproof. I would buy MOTU again and the bug just as likely Apple's as MOTU's fault.

Oh that’s not good. My Mk 1 (on Mojave up to couple of months ago when I got a new machine) needed 3 dongles in serial to run but was flawless.

The Mark 5 is brilliant so far.

not sure, as i'm always switching my devices off before i put my Mac to sleep, but from what i've gathered this is more a bug or glitch of macOS since Monterey i think, as many people are complaining about this with various kinds of devices from different manufacturers.
The GAS is always greener on the other side!

Pre Monterey, because it happens to me on High Sierra. I don't know where to point the blame but a real shame that hardware built to such exacting standards is tripped up by a driver flaw. I'll likely keep it around as a standalone box long after I have no OS that can still run Cuemix.

On my new Mac I’ve actually got it set to never go to sleep. Not sure why I’d want it to sleep.

do you let your screen turn off at least? and why don't you let it sleep? those components aren't magic, they benefit from rest just like anything else.

not telling you what to do, just trying to understand the purpose..

I’ll sleep when I’m dead 😵

Sure, I let the screen turn off (after15 mins) but when my computer is on I like it armed and ready.

Maybe it’s daft but I’ve pretty much always put settings on high performance when there was such an option, don’t want it to interrupt me if I leave it for a bit and it starts to power down or whatever.

My machines last years so no harm done, it seems.

Where I live we get a fair few thunderstorms so I’ve got into the habit of turning it off completely when I’m done.

I use a menubar app like caffeine, or now keeping you awake, so I can choose when to sleep or not with a single click. One reason to sleep is the environmental / energy savings. Perhaps inconsequential, but sort of like turning off the lights when you're not in the room.

So can I update to Ventura safely now?
If you plan on purchasing your first Universal Audio hardware, you can get a free additional plugin. Just send a PM.

does any software you use require you to update to ventura? are there some new features in ventura that you're interested in using?
