Ok, these files aren't compatible with Kontakt. I've installed the player and loaded up the Liverpool Four file and wrote a drum part fine. Then when I came back to the project I get a message telling me it's a "non player instrument" and that I need the full version of kontakt. What is going on here?

If a Kontakt library needs to be authorised via Native Access, it will work fully with Kontakt Player, or the full authorised version of Kontakt. (The library may work for short periods of time if unauthorised.)
If it doesnt need authorisation, it will only work with the full authorised version of Kontakt.

The free version of kontakt doesn't work with products like these, which I don't understand. But i'm certainly not paying alost three hundred quid. I think that commercial British sound of the 60's / 70's is quite underappreciated. I recently discovered a lot of cool shit, some of it via the KPM 1000 compilations on Spotify. Brian Bennet, Alan Hawkshaw, Alan Tew etc.
To the OP's question: I don't think it'll be too hard to find appropriate samples and program up a beat. The problem will come with drum fills. All the drummers of that period, even the rocky and funky ones, came from a jazz background, so had that loose feel, fast hands, a lighter touch than modern drummers. This is really hard to program up via MIDI and to sound realistic or even cool. Can't think of a solution to that other than finding a ready made sample pack with fills included. Personally i'm not into that sort of thing, but if it's for something commercial, why not?!
