Logic and AU instrument midi out

I've been using Logic for a year and a half or so, and had reason to delve into the environment for one project, though not particularly deeply.
Based on what I've seen so far I've assumed that the architecture of Logic doesn't allow for sending the midi output from one AU instrument to another. Is that correct?
In a current project I'm quite keen to route Pigments' arpeggiator to another synth. I'm thinking I'll probably have to find a way to record the output as midi data in a clip, and use that statically with another synth. Or is there another way?

You could use the standalone and route Midi with IAC…

i asked this a similar question on another forum and got this replay which made me slap my forehead. this example uses instacomposer as example:
this same process works for external midi instruments too. you just have to use the IACbus and make sure you set it up right. it's not perfect but works. should be simpler of course. and just make sure in the external instrument you select the IAC buss an proper channel etc.It is simple
Create 2 tracks
First track, load External Instrument send out to IAC
Load InstaComposer as MIDI FX.
Make sure you have a midi region with a note the length of the number of bars you're wanting to output from InstaComposer on the External Instrument track.
Second track, load any instrument, make sure to select the track.
Press play, hear the output.
Press record and all gets MIDI created.

Thanks for the help. I'll give it a try when I have a spare chunk of time.dayjob wrote: Thu Dec 22, 2022 12:23 am this same process works for external midi instruments too. you just have to use the IACbus and make sure you set it up right. it's not perfect but works. should be simpler of course. and just make sure in the external instrument you select the IAC buss an proper channel etc.

Did you ever get this to work with Pigments? I tried and it didn't, but I might have missed some step in Logic.
In Reaper you just load the VST instead and routing works fine.

No, I think I exported the region to Reaper, rendered Pigments midi out and took it back into Logic.stoopicus wrote: Mon Nov 27, 2023 9:06 pm Did you ever get this to work with Pigments? I tried and it didn't, but I might have missed some step in Logic.

Try it in Logic 10.8, it now supports MIDI out from AU plugins, although it is clearly a work in progress as it is buggy (eg you will get duplicated notes - the way round that is to just select one MIDI in and on MIDI channel 1, and route the MIDI out to anything else)
Obviously that won't work if you are in MPE mode

Hmm, not sure what it takes to make this work.aMUSEd wrote: Tue Nov 28, 2023 2:28 pm Try it in Logic 10.8, it now supports MIDI out from AU plugins, although it is clearly a work in progress
I am also seeing a weird thing with logic sending immediate NOTE OFF to external synths after about an eighth note, and not allowing sustain. It even does it with its internal keyboard. Not sure what's up with that.

Yeah it’s still not working properly but the double notes bug is fixed

Curious about this, I haven't googled to see if there aren't details, but Logic could always use an AUi as a MDI FX if it was coded to do so. Reason Rack and Blue Arp for example, but in the case of Reason Rack you would get no internal Rack instruments sound out, since it has to be instantiated in the MIDI FX slot in Logic. Is there now the ability like in Live, DP, Bitwig etc. to use a AUi as a MIDI input in another instruments track?aMUSEd wrote: Tue Nov 28, 2023 2:28 pm Try it in Logic 10.8, it now supports MIDI out from AU plugins, although it is clearly a work in progress as it is buggy (eg you will get duplicated notes - the way round that is to just select one MIDI in and on MIDI channel 1, and route the MIDI out to anything else)

I just opened a project to have a look at what changes there are to midi out, and I just created a simple midi sequence with a Pigments arp: setting the track to record and then recording automatically records the Pigments arp midi into that same track... so if you set record settings to create a new track, or overlap clips, then the original midi and new arp midi are separate.

good, that seems like a target rich environment for them
