It's probably best not to expect to know what you are doing with this stuff most of the time. Musically it is an advantage to be able to sight read etc., but for me it's the harmony and theory study I did for a while that really gives me satisfaction. But when it comes to using VSTs and sequencers whenever I endeavor to understand what is happening in any depth I usually get messed up. Best to let go and experiment and try new things. It's when I do that that I most often get some good results.

The trick is to make sure you get it in the right hole, and I'm pretty good at that (except for that one time).

O.K you called my bluff...

I haven,t a clue what i,m doing most of the time and i find it most satisfying.

i normally find the music i have written quickly and emotionally, whilst caught in a moment of experimental inspiration, to be much more interesting than anything based oa a concious ,cerebral understanding of the mathematics of music.

When in that state, just sort of caressing the strings of my guitar or beating the shit of the piano ,i lose myself utterly to my subconcious universe ...then music theory is the last thing on my mind...

Yes i am the guy next door who wakes you up at 3 a.m. singing his heart out.... :band:

The only correct answer.

Nor am I famous, except in Japan, where I have 1 fan.

I can't quite read in real time, however I'm getting there. If I wanna play something that's not mine I usually just memorize the song, though sheet music is nice if you want the exact voicings used in any given song. I understand chord theory fairly extensively (secondary function, interchange, modal harmony, cadence borrowing, candence linking; subdominant minor cadences; all fun stuff). Theory facinates me, maybe I'm a wierdo. For melodic and synthy stuff, I usually just experiment, as I think that results in the most interesting sound, though I can program lots of trendy stuff too if the situation calls for it.
