I'm thinking of permanently switching to Artist because of the upgrade price of Pro. It's just not worth it to me. I am starting to have some serious problems with 5.x that I absolutely need Presonus to do something about but you can bet their first solution will be to upgrade.

For the record, as of just a few days ago, around half my songs will no longer play back without serious glitching, distortion and slowdown. Songs that I have been working on for months, which a week ago played perfectly well, now cough and splutter their way through. This morning I discovered a way to reset one of my songs - by switching the synth that uses the most CPU off for a few minutes, then switching it back on. That will give me another one or two runs through before it starts to play up again. But that's a project that normally only uses around 30%-40% of my available processing power, it should be able to play it back with a 16 sample buffer, yet it glitches with 128.

My first thought was that there was something else eating up CPU but Task Manager doesn't show anything. I definitely cannot have any other applications open while I am using S1 any more. Even on its own, it has become basically unusable.

There hasn’t been an update for 5.x lately. Check your audio buffer and dropout handling settings. If they changed recently, that could explain your new issues.

It could also be due to a Windows update.

I mean, 16 samples buffer is very low for playback. I have 9900k and 64gb ram and even I don't playback on 16 samples. 128 is sweet spot for me for playback and recording. But of course, it's your preference and you claim that it was all okay a week ago.
I suggest updating your drivers for MEI and/or BIOS because the problem sounds like hardware. You can also try to update your Windows/MacOS or at last, you can try to re-install the OS.

I somehow don't think it is related to S1.

By the way, it seems like we will not get any discounts for the upgrade in the near future. I'll buy it for $129 from a local distributor today.

128 is also my choice but my stupid I/O device likes to pick a random buffer every time I start Studio One. Sometimes I can be working for ages before I realise it's 16 or 32 samples.

I am 99% sure it's not directly related to S1, although it could be a compatibility issue with something that's changed in Windows. My major suspects at the moment are recent BIOS and Win11 updates, which coincide quite neatly with the onset of problems. First, though, I want to try a different interface and also see how my other computer goes, after switching off my router so it can't update anything (I haven't switched it on in a month or more). It's already running Artist v6 and it has everything I need/use in Studio One, which makes Pro a waste of money for me. As soon as I'm sure all my old projects are Artist compatible, I'll probably ditch Pro altogether.

I think you are using UR44C as your signature suggests, I had too much trouble with Steinberg (and also Focusrite) drivers on Windows. It might be your interface's fault. And you say it randomly picks buffer size, so definitely something is wrong with it.
I use 1824c and it works so smoothly, drivers, as far as my experience, are superb.

I used Roland Tri-Capture - it was really bad and outdated. It didn't have an ASIO driver, I was using ASIO4ALL.
Then UR22, bad drivers, caused too many pops and drops even on high buffer size.
Then 4i4 MK2, drivers crashed too many times, having to restart the PC every time it happened.
Then got 1824c and no problems ever since. Works really great especially paired with Studio One.

I also finally went ahead and bought S1 6 upgrade, didn't have a chance to install it yet but even the facelift looks good.

What subscription vendors are all really saying (v tongue in cheek)

"Every day we're listening really hard to our users, developing all the new features you asked for, giving you what you want & need, when you need it.

And now we're offering a subscription service that you didn't ask for and don't need, but we deem as better for you.

Aren't you glad we keep asking you what you want?"

Well, that's set my mind at ease

They’re just trying to figure out how to get the same small group of customers to keep purchasing the same handful of products over and over again.

Stdui One 6 is again on -25% discount. But GAIN only for new customers, upgrades are not included to this discount - again :scared: From the Presonus discount info " Offer only valid for new users.". Nice way to thank old customers :D

They just want to make people go down the subscription route rather than upgrade

Might do the same - I don't think there is much in Pro I would really miss but the upgrade price is a bad joke

Yeah, seems that way very much :(

I'll find another DAW before I go to a subscription

If it comes down to Subscription only (which I doubt it ever would) I'd just stick with the latest version available to me and just keep using that, it should see me out, it already does everything I need and more, and has done for a number of years.

Yeah. I've had v6 Artist for a couple of months now and I am yet to use any of the v6 features, beyond a bit of GUI customisation, which is neither here nor there, really. If anything, using v6 on one of my computers makes me less inclined to upgrade the other one. The new v6 stuff is all but irrelevant to the way I use Studio One.

I'm loving it! I've been using it on my new Asus ROG Flow Z13 (which I shall, from here on, refer to simply as "Z13") and, so far, I have not hit any obstacles. I've probably opened 30 songs made in Pro 5.x and they all open and play perfectly.
