Comparing Dune 3.5 With Hive 2

For pads, which one is better? I like what I've heard on youtube from Dune 3 for pads, but can Hive 2 match the ambient and atmospheric pads that Dune 3 can make?

Why the hassle? Because I have control over doing that and I have no control over how it is implemented.Tj Shredder wrote: Wed Dec 28, 2022 10:37 amI know, but why that hassle if correctly implemented it would simply work...pdxindy wrote: Wed Dec 28, 2022 4:21 am
You should be able to use Note Grid to make sustain go to all channels...
To do it complete in the Note Grid is a nightmare! A Note FX Layer, 15 Channel Maps and 14 Channel filters is a better option...
But if I do that, Hive acts strange. I hit sustain, and the sound gets louder and brighter, as if sustain is modulating something on the Church of Digital preset...
And in a general discussion, I agree with Urs... but in any case, it is easy enough for example to make a modwheel work with all MPE channels in a u-he synth in Bitwig. Create a macro knob in the Bitwig Hive device. Assign the Macro knob to cutoff (or whatever) and then add a Midi modulator which receives CC1 and which then controls the macro knob. Now your modwheel will control cutoff for every note regardless of midi channel.
I've never had a use for the sustain pedal and MPE so never thought about that one. But like with the modwheel, I would ignore midi channels and CC's and create a latch function in Note Grid. In the Latch device the kill button is not modulatable so I've created a latch device in Note Grid that can use various ways to kill the latch so I know that works... but not sure how to control it with the sustain pedal.
It would be handy if Bitwig added an option to the Latch device for it to be momentary and defined by the sustain pedal. That would work regardless of midi channel too.

Hive can do gorgeous ambient and atmospheric pads... Here's a sound demo of one of mine in Hive (single instance and no added FX)3ptguitarist wrote: Wed Dec 28, 2022 3:58 pm For pads, which one is better? Both good actually, Dune has a nice shimmer reverb and can take audio samples which can give it a whole load of sounds that HIVE can't.3ptguitarist wrote: Wed Dec 28, 2022 3:58 pm For pads, which one is better? With the Shimmer Verb and 8 layer system, I prefer Dune for lush ambient pads. Gives you a ton of control to get deep with them.

Do you have any sound samples of pads you've made with dunemMattLeschuck wrote: Thu Dec 29, 2022 2:30 am With the Shimmer Verb and 8 layer system, I prefer Dune for lush ambient pads. Gives you a ton of control to get deep with them.

I feel like saying pads and not defining what kind of pad or purpose for the sound makes discussions of pads difficult. Some are just one finger pad that just does everything, or it can be played along with other instruments.
I love pads that are in the background of a piano (I usually just do a bunch of delays and eq of the piano I am backing) but I go to Diva or Zebra for 90s pad sounds. It also can be an atmosphere more like sound design. It can also be an ambient moving sound that Brian Eno just made you sit in silence for 12 minutes as a sorbet to your emotional pallet.
So what pads are you looking for? If its modulating a lot Hive does that well. If it's an old-school lush analog sound than Hive can do some things but Dune is better for that.

Bitwig is my DAWs and UHe and Tracktion Synths are my Bae. I maybe buy one synth a year. REMEMBER SELF just one synth a year!

One advantage I did not read so far. U-he plugins are super nice to install. No hassle with online activation. When having bought a lot of plugins these things matter when you upgrade your computer.

To be fair, I think the online activation of Synapse is just a way to register software easier - copy/paste serial and you're done. I think their offline activation is similar to ours?midi_transmission wrote: Sun Jan 01, 2023 3:36 pm One advantage I did not read so far. U-he plugins are super nice to install. With us, you always have to write down two things, user name and serial. This does complicate it a bit. We're working on a new method (inspired by Plogue) where in future you'll have a "License Card". This is a pretty looking PNG image file that holds all your u-he registrations. You just drag it on one plug-in, and then all plug-ins will be registered. Now, *that* is going to be comfortable!

Actually, I'm not 100% sure on Synapse. But to my knowledge it's challenge response. Maybe someone could clarify.Urs wrote: Sun Jan 01, 2023 5:07 pmTo be fair, I think the online activation of Synapse is just a way to register software easier - copy/paste serial and you're done. That's true, that Ploque card is great. I'm a long time user from their products as well.

In addition and generally speaking.
In my opinion it's fully deserved that every developer get some credits for a customer friendly copy protection. There is no perfect solution unfortunately for perfect protection and user friendly behaviour.
I don't mean to disrespect any developers who decide otherwise and I can understand how you can come to a different concusion. But the ones that favour the experience from their honest users should get credit for that in return.

Customer friendly copy protection: Doesn't get in your way and is easy to activate. Frankly, most (audio) software has a customer friendly copy protection in those regards. I know, KVR likes to complain. And, it's also (not just) a bit of a political issue.
I tried to activate an older game on my Windows 11 PC today, by the way. Not only did I have to install the copy protection system manually (former Windows versions had it pre-installed), no, it also happened that the activation servers obviously have been shut down in the meantime. Which means I ended up with a not to activate game. Meh. Could get a crack (It's legal in Germany when the copy protection prevents you from being able to activate or play the game), but, I'm scared of malware on these sites.
Where were we? Oh, yes, copy prtections on audio software. Didn't have such issues with it yet.
