I have a Lenovo laptop, Thinkpad, i5, Windows 7. It has 4 GB of RAM which I want to increase. I found a site which sells memory, and given the serial number of the computer, the site tells me that the computer's memory capacity is 16 GB.

I took the cover off the memory compartment and found one 4 GB module and another similar slot empty. I suppose that this means one of two things: (1) all modules - 4, 8, or 16 GB, are all the same physical size, and the computer really can take 16GB; or (2) my laptop really only takes 8 GB of memory at maximum.
Please advise. Thank you.

Usually all slots need to be filled with the same type of RAM.
So your options are:
1. Add another 4Gb, totals to 8Gb.
2. Replace the 4Gb module with 2x 8Gb, totals to 16Gb.

Ah! Thank you.. So the 4GB and the 8GB are the same physical size, so it does take 16. OK. while I'm at it, is there a reliable brand of DDR3 is might look at? (2 x 8.)

I just replaced 2x4s in my Dell with 2x8s of Crucial RAM with zero problems.

well yes. it would be utterly insane if the specifications were different, solely based on capacity.
consider the impact on the production lines for example...

In case your laptop is one of those the manufacturer undersells regrading RAM capacity, you can check what's the maximum RAM capacity thusly:
1. Press Windows Key + R, type “cmd” in the search bar, and press Enter.
2. On the command prompt screen, type wmic memphysical get maxcapacity then press Enter.
My maxcapacity shows up as 33554432 which rounds off to 32GB. (33554432KB / 1024 = 32768MB).
