Trackball or Mouse?

For me that would be a smaller area than an Apple trackpad takes up and probably as much area as you'd need for a trackball. If you look at how little your mouse actually moves when you use it, you'd be surprised how little room you'd need. I use my mouse at home in a space less than twice its width and it's perfectly fine. On it's most sensitive setting, it will move the cursor from one edge of the screen to the other in less than 1cm of travel across my table.

logitech ergo mx for me solved my RSI concerns without switching all the way to a trackball.
