For those asking about the skins for Rapid and have problems finding them, they can be now found on my site that's been updated by clicking here. Which, I'm sure many non-users will enjoy learning about
. On the flip side, a new advanced and un-released skin for U-HE's Hive 2 will be uploaded there, in the next few days.

Try using the ModNoise source with slew (SL in the matrix modifier menu) set to max (Slow) and assigning that in small amounts to pitch, phase etc as a means to simulate analog instabilities. Depending on the patch/MIDI you can also use the Random modulator (which can be rectified/unipolarised and slew limited) to add per note instabilities. Not so useful for sustained pads, for example, but for 8 or 16th note arps i.e. lots of note triggering, it's very useful!chagzuki wrote: Sun Jan 01, 2023 9:56 am I've only tried the Hive demo for a short while. Perhaps I'm missing how the modulation system can be used, but isn't two LFOs rather limiting?
For instance, in Rapid I'll tend to use one LFO in random glide mode, polyphonic, and have that as an all-purpose instability modifier to push things in an analog direction. That leaves 3 more to work with, which is generally enough. Does one need to use an LFO to simulate oscillator drift in Hive or is there another way?
Edit: if the above is too noisy/dirty for you, you can use a trick from the manual for smoother results!
The ModNoise source can be used to ‘roughen’ any target, but smoothed by two slew limiters it can also be used for emulating the typical instability of old analogue oscillators: Starting from
init, set the main source of matrix slot 01 to ModNoise. Drag from the upper target field onto the
lower knob in that same matrix slot, then from the lower target field onto OSC1 Semitone.
Turn the upper Depth knob up to about 20 (the lower Depth is being modulated, so leave it at
0.00). Finally, set both slew limiters (SL) to slow. Try mixing with a perfectly ‘stable’ oscillator…
This is why Hive is my favourite synth, it's so unassuming on a surface level but has so many elegant tricks hidden up its sleeve!
Always Read the Manual!

You can also use Mod Noise as a modulator and use the S&H modifier plus the Slew to create a random glide without using an LFO.chagzuki wrote: Sun Jan 01, 2023 9:56 am I've only tried the Hive demo for a short while. There is really plenty of modulation in Hive.

Nice tip. I still haven't delved much into the S&H modifiers, even after reading the manual I still can't quite wrap my head around them. Need to dedicate some time to fully understand them for sure!pdxindy wrote: Thu Jan 05, 2023 4:24 pmYou can also use Mod Noise as a modulator and use the S&H modifier plus the Slew to create a random glide without using an LFO.chagzuki wrote: Sun Jan 01, 2023 9:56 am I've only tried the Hive demo for a short while. Absolutely and I make use of the rest of them in every patch I make, just not S&H! Need to up my game so I can become an even more insufferable fanboypdxindy wrote: Thu Jan 05, 2023 4:53 pmPieBerger wrote: Thu Jan 05, 2023 4:31 pmNice tip. There is really plenty of modulation in Hive. The Modifiers are quite powerful!

I resd that as "MAD rabbit hole".martinjuenke wrote: Tue Jan 03, 2023 8:53 am The Rapid embassador announces Rapid repeately and tries to woo us into his rad rabbit hole.
But then, I just came back from the eye doctor.
I started on Logic 5 with a PowerBook G4 550Mhz. I now have a MacBook Air M1 and it's ~165x faster! So, why is my music not proportionally better?
