November 7, 2022: Voxengo SPAN version 3.15 update is now available for download. SPAN is a free real-time “fast Fourier transform” audio spectrum analyzer plugin for professional music and audio production applications. SPAN is available in AudioUnit, AAX, VST, and VST3 plugin formats, for macOS and Windows computers.

The list of changes in version 3.15:

* Changed spectrum's "Freq Lo" maximum to 500 Hz (down from 1000 Hz), and "Freq Hi" minimum to 600 (down from 2000 Hz), to permit finer low- and mid-frequency range selections.
* Added the "Spectrum, meter border" palette modifier. Updated palettes.
* Made a small speed-up of GUI loading and drawing.
* Fixed an issue with popup-menus not functioning in Logic Pro on Apple M1 native.
* Implemented "Portable Setups" support (portable settings), read more in the Primary User Guide.

SPAN provides you with a very flexible “mode” system which you can use to setup your spectrum analyzer preferences. You may specify Fourier block size in samples, FFT window overlap percentage, spectrum's visual slope. Beside that you can choose to display secondary spectrum of a desired type (e.g. real-time maximum, all-time maximum). Spectrum can be smoothed out visually for an easier examination.

SPAN features:

* Output signal power statistics
* Spectrum smoothing
* User interface window resizing
* Clipping statistics
* Correlation meter
* EBU R128 LUFS/LU metering
* K-metering
* Stereo and multi-channel analysis
* Mid/side analysis
* Internal channel routing
* Channel grouping
* Preset manager
* Undo/redo history
* A/B comparisons
* Contextual hint messages
* All sample rates support
* Retina and HighDPI support

It will be fixed in all plugins with the upcoming updates. Was hard to hunt the bug down as Logic Pro was like a single instance where the problem happened. The bug is due to some change in macOS windowing system on Apple M1, and I think it's macOS bug: the window indexing does not represent window Z-order anymore. We had to redo some things completely due to that.

Love it.

Only thing I would like to add is a simple "bar" mode 1/3Oct option (instead of a line).

For "bar" spectrum analyzer I suggest you to check Voxengo AnSpec out.

With your new "portable setup" settings can the plugins set as such be upgraded by newer installer versions or do we need to repeat the portable voodoo each time?

Thanks,
Mario

Depends on where you install the plugins. If you first installed them on HD, then copied the DLL to flash disk, you'll need to repeat. If you installed on flash disk initially (VstPlugins folder on flash), the update will go to flash disk as well.

An installer is overkill and a hassle. You only need the actual plugin, and maybe the manual, so I always end up moving copies to my VstPlugins directory, then uninstalling (while keeping the copies) -- seriously, who needs a zillion uninstallers and shortcuts cluttering up their rig?
Wait... loot _then_ burn? D'oh!

Thanks for the update!
VST3 version still has this bug (at least in FL): when you open a project, the interface adopts its default windows size, but the plugin irteface appears truncated

I think we already had a discussion. In my opinion, this is FL Studio's bug as I've yet to hear about it in other host applications. In VST3, it is host's responsibility to adjust window sizes correctly. It's possible FL Studio does not follow plug-in's "minimal" UI size requirement, which is a part of VST3 protocol. There's nothing I can do, so please report to FL Studio developers.

Thank you greatly for this update, human

...this version no longer has 4 in/outputs, correct? ...as in sidechaining from other busses?

It does have 8in-out capability. But in VST3 that's usually limited by the host application. In VST2, in Ableton Live or Reaper this should still be possible.

I'll note that I have probably found a workaround for the resizing issue in FL Studio and Cubase at non-100% DPI settings, an update is planned for release soon. I've just added a VST3 "ScaleFactor" call handler that does nothing (meaning FL Studio does behave in a wrong way if that handler is unavailable).
