Hi,
Can someone give me any pre processing tips for an audio sample before importing into ST2xl so as to get better results.

i am importing some vocalist samples (at C3).
but upto about G3 they sound fine any ahead i hear gargling sound, a few notes further it sounds like she got a shovel up her a...! , i can't wait to let her hear like that though , :)

i understand that stretch is already stretching the tech barrier beyond limits.

oh, and the sample does not contain a sustain loop or anything its more of a one shot, but even in sustained loops i had similar issues.
Any Ideas, recommendation?.
i use soundforge.
THX.

It helps when the vocal audio file is clean. If there is noise it can interfere with the accuracy of the preanalysis. It also helps if the vocalist is in tune and singing clearly. But, really it is hit and miss. Of course it would be that way with this kind of technology. But, it is fun seeing what you can do.

For some real-time Stretch tips there was a video that I did on www.sampletank.com (it's still there- go check it out). I went through a few of the cool tricks you can do with Stretch.

There's also some good news coming for Stretch fans. Can't say more yet though.

Thx Squids for a prompt reply,
Actually i have been through that video, and that is what gave me some great ideas to Play with Stretch.
THX to that video, i just took a vacation and exploring new ideas for 2005 gig.

As for my progress,
i have done few things as posted below, with the samples and resuls are bit better. Hope these ideas help some other creative users and we get few more tricks in the bag.

1. DC correct,
2. in case of stereo ,(dunno why i got a vocal sample in stereo in first place),convert to mono.
3. Run a lowpass or any other eq and get high end out,
4. Mutate the sample using gating.
5. if the sample has long evolving release/fade out, it can make mix muddy. Take em out at sample level if you can.

Before i forget to mention, after all this tweaking for the real thing , if you wanna get wicked/creative results -> add some sweeps on it, gets GRUNGEEE at low formants , shift the dc of the sample quite a bit you can get some bizzare nuances , and if compression suits your sample, compress it to even out oddities and a de-esser can come handy in vocals.

6. IMPORT

7. Spend hours and play,
8. come back here and share some ideas(unless IPR)

BTW - these are more of hits and misses that i found working in samples i had and no way to be taken seriously and may or may not work for you.

Yes, playing around with EQ and filters can also help. A mono signal is good too. The more simple it is and the more detectable the fundamental is the more accurate the preanalysis.

But, there ARE some really great surprises uses Stretch FOR its artifacts and oddness. So, it is a tool of surprises. You can trick it into doing some wacked out stuff for sure.
