I have a couple of very old discs where the data can't be accessed at all just from Windows, but I'd imagine it's something to do with the file system/something minor.

A search reveals many software tools for recovery: has anyone here had good experiences with particular ones?

I had some success with CD Roller, and people seemed helpful me getting something strangeness with license expired despite being legit and just sent me a new one.

But fixed back content on a DVD RW where fat was corrupt.

But windows 7 I had most issues with is a strange cat. You had to let system do it's thing with disk after inserting before any software you used did that. So it messed up a DVD RW so fat table were corrupt and no sense what was on disk anymore. I ruined about 20 DVD RW disk on windows 7.

I also updated firmware on that DVD drive but did not help. So bought a new DVD drive that worked better. So not sure how much was Windows and drive itself.

So check for firmware updates on drive itself as a start as one tip.

Thought it would be smart to use DVD RW to be able to overwrite and test video disks I did.

Windows xp were more consistent and no such strange things. I ripped loads of CD disks with Foobar2000 which is free software.

Windows 7 interferes a lot and I suggest not being online with any windows at all. I tried to make party cd's picking songs from various cd's and it interferes and calculate number of tries and things and just fails. So I did everything on XP instead.

I suspect later windows are as bad as windows 7.
