Apple recently released its MBP lineup for ‘23 with the M2 Pro and Max chips. Ostensibly, they’re 20% faster for multithreaded code. My question is: are DAWs (and, in my case, Ableton in particular) coded to run in parallel? I faintly recall reading somewhere that most DAWs use serial processing, but perhaps that’s outdated now? Does anyone know if this performance increase will be realized for audio applications? I currently use an M1P and am curious as to the value of upgrading either to the current gen or future generations.

Live runs each track (or group) on a separate core. So it depends on how you work. You’d probably notice a performance increase when running lots of instruments, each on its own on discrete track, but not so much when loading instrument and effect racks with lots of chains onto a single channel.
