So, in theory what i'm trying to achieve is pretty simple, but I just can't really figure out how to go about "engineering" it...
I've got some room mics up and I really like the wash of the cymbals that I'm getting from them (tracking drums). They're really tying the sound of the kit together nicely, but I don't want any of the shells in there -no kick or snare, etc -How would I go about taking out those sounds from my ambient room mics, leaving just the wash of the cymbals? Even when I high pass or shelf the snot out of the room mics you can still hear the snare and the rest of the shells in there coming through in the mix...
Would I sidechain the room mics to the snare? Maybe ducking?? These are techniques I never really had a use for until now... Not really sure how to go about doing this -especially in Reaper...

There are many possibilities. Sequentially:
1. Use a VST-gate. You have to fine-adjust the threshold.
If that doesn't work, you can:
2. Sidechain the Gate with the unwanted sounds (kick, snare)
If that doesn't work, you can:
3. Underlay sample-drums and blend them together. That is the
"professional" way which gives you more control about every
single sound.
