The Neural Amp Modeler (NAM) plugin works by loading profiles of real guitar/bass amps or pedals, studio preamps (*.NAM file format). You do not have to capture your own amps/pedals to use, as there are hundreds of free profiles available to download already (links below). To anyone that doesn’t know what an amp profiler loader/player is, it’s basically an ampsim that works in a different way, that does not use algo modeling, but a captured state of a real amp or pedal etc through machine learning (IK Multimedia Tonex, Overloud TH-U Rig Player, Kemper profiler, Neural DSP Quad Cortex).

This is being developed by Steve Acktinson, as a completely free and generous open source project that he does as a hobby in his spare time. A crowd source group good vibes effort has adopted his baby and helped it grow to what it now is from over a year ago when he first offered a few vst3 ports of his profiles. An ever growing community, mostly through the NAM Facebook group, is offering their skills and generosity through creating and sharing profiles and technical knowledge, answering questions and trying to improve the plugin and offering profile sharing platforms.

Neural Amp Modeler is open-source on GitHub!🎉

Keep in mind, this plugin and trainer is still officially in BETA. There may be bugs and may not work on all DAWS perfectly. The standalone version has been giving people problems on certain OS/systems. It's recommend to use the plugin version for better stability right now. You can find most answers on the Facebook group. There is a bug report feature on the GITHUB page.

There are FAQs and tutorial videos on how to use the NAM Trainer in the FB group and on youtube, which allows you to capture a real amp or a pedal. Many knowledgeable people in the group can assist you with reamping/training. If you are able to shoot the profile of your amp through reamping but are confused on or can't get the trainer to work, there are some people in the group who will gladly do the training and make the *.nam files for you, just send them your wavs.

Quick how to use the Neural Amp plugin/player within a DAW:
First, NAM only supports sample rates of 48K khz, so make sure that is set in your sound/interface and DAW audio settings, when using it in standalone or in a DAW. The Neural Amp Modeler (NAM) plugin works by loading profiles of real amps (*.NAM file format) in the "Select model..." slot. Navigate to folder where you downloaded your *.NAM files and open one of them. NAM is only (in most cases) the preamp/power amp combination captured via a loadbox, and needs either an IR loaded (0.7 NAM plugin version only supports 24bit 48Khz MONO IR files), or you can, which is recommended for IR compatibility, use an IR loader plugin/cabsim directly after the NAM plugin. 0.7.1 version may have fixed IR compatibility issues. The EQ controls on the plugin are not an amp's tonestack controls, but rather active studio EQ for boosts or cuts after the preamp/power amp profile, but before the final volume output. Also important to note, the INPUT gain control has a big impact on how the specific model you have loaded will sound and react, some models may need less gain and others more. If it sounds boomy and too compressed with no headroom, lower the input and raise the output level if needed; if it is not reacting the right way and sounding quiet, raise the input gain. As with real amps, you can use any pedal or effect before the NAM plugin, such as overdrives/boosts, compression, modulation etc.

Fascinating. Hopefully this gets easier to use in time. I'm no programmer but I've got a few nice tube amps and a lot of pedals. Would be cool to eventually be able to create my own amp profiles and spit them out as VST3 plugins.

And thanks for sharing the files!

Can't wait to get off of work so I can try, thanks for letting us know.

He could have removed them. He said maybe at any point they may disappear from his google drive.

Been lots of new improved development in the past few months, a standalone rig capture software app also now with a MAC build done with the help of Oli Larkin, a vst/plugin profile loader, and dedicated FB group, new captures from new users (A very nice high quality Victory Kracken v4 capture profile is up there).

For those of you that don't want to weed through a FB group to find links etc, here ya go. Although he has since stickied/featured the posts/links for the model loader vst and the capture software as they're updated. I have went through the thread and made a zip file of some the models.

Load up the plugin in your daw and then navigate to the directory and load up a folder for the profile. There will be two files in each capture folder, a "config.json" file and a "weights.npy" file, just load the folder directory that those are in for the amp capture model. These will need some sort of cab sim IR loader after the Neural Amp Loader plugin.

Facebook doesn't seems the best way to get involvement.
I know a bunch of guys with amps to profile and they don't use FB, but forums only.

When i tried to get infos about NAM, i got it here, not on FB.
Because FB is (almost) a closed system.

I got into NAM with youtube (less closed than FB too).

Thanks for posting here !

This. 100 per. Only reason I haven't at least listened to clips is there is nothing up there on yt and I canceled my fb account many moons ago. I know a ton others that are canceling off that dinosaur platform with a history of abusing people's personal info. No thanks.

dang - this certainly looks interesting! And I almost completely overlooked this thread because I misread its title and thought this was another boring Neural DSP "Archetype" product that aims at reproducing the gear of another tedious shredder I've never heard of (named Steve Ack)
"Preamps have literally one job: when you turn up the gain, it gets louder." Jamcat, talking about presmp-emulation plugins.
