Why do establised geniuses like Gabriel and Ferry suck now?

preferring the 'magickal' def. of 'genius' as an developed intelligence associated with a sphere of knowledge..

..but oc in common usage, let's keep it as an absolute so we always know what is and what isn't and that ought to keep the scumbags in line. aah, the beauty of a nice, centralised authority to refer to :D

I'm agree with this. I've seen this year Peter Gabriel live 2 times and the recent stuff (Ovo, UP) is very good (tracks like "Signal to noise" are magic in concert).

Perhaps it does not sound as good as the old stuff but I think it's because we always want to be surprised but also want to hear the sound of these old albums (but the numeric technology has changed the sound of the recordings).

Just listen to UP as if it was not Peter Gabriel, and you must say : who is the genius behind this ?

I think we have different definitions.

These are musicians. They'd be hard pressed to find jobs pumping gasoline if they hadn't struck gold when they were children.

I don't think I've ever met a genius.

the old Genesis stuff is fantastic but a bit immature - which is no wonder as they were all rather young.

The artist Peter Gabriel has come such a long way since the old Genesis days.

His stuff is still rather innovative and I think this is the real reason why some of the 'old fans' have a problem with his current material.

'Real fans' usually want the time to stand still.
Thus they always cry for the 'good old days'. :shrug:

Maybe they haven't changed, maybe you've changed. Perhaps they weren't the geniuses you thought. Maybe what they were doing was only a revelation to you at your then current level of experience and stage of development. Just a possibility.

Not a possibility. Have you ever listened to the albums "Stranded" and/or "Country Life"? They are still incredible, vital rock albums that stand up today no matter how you might measure them. Incredible songs, incredible band performances, incredible lyrics, incredible album continuity (almost a lost art nowadays), incredible production. "Country Life" ought to be used as a primer for how far you can take tape saturation without causing your hair to singe. :D Still modern, believe it or not. Listen to them some time if you doubt me.

Gabriel and Genesis--not to be confused with Genesis after Gabriel, when they, well, sold out big time--is much more "of the time", when excessive musicianship and classical/romantic lyrical themes were accepted. Not "street" enough for contemporary ears. But still wondrous, in their own regrettably dated way. More melodic invention is packed into "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" than in a year's worth of Modern Rock chart releases. And most of that is really creditable to Tony Banks, not Gabriel. However, if a younger listener was interested in the potential of an alternative to the modern aesthetic, like some younger classic rock fans are, then Genesis' music would still stand up simply because there are few if any bands today that ever try anything of this sort. And even fewer who have the compositional chops and technical skills to pull it off. If you don't believe me, then listen to "The Lamia", or "In the Cage", or "Anyway", or "The Cinema Show"....

I once read an interview with Sianspheric in which they mentioned that using ghettoblasters in the studio was a technique used by Daniel Lanois. Good way of building vague layers of sound.

To Paul, not trying to call names, but you seem to be a bit of a broken record on this. As though none of what's been mentioned in this thread has stuck with you. Ten years on from Lamb Lies Down, Peter Gabriel was still making interesting music. Maybe not to your tastes, but the stuff he did in the 80s was not devoid of invention. So that's a pretty good run by anyone's standards.

You're question seems to be "Why don't old rich men make me feel alive?" Well, I think you already have the answer.

baahhh: Kieth Richards use to play into a tape deck and the just mic that into the mixer, love the treble.

I'm gathering that this all stems from the FM article (need to put Oz back in charge :P , five guys sitting around listening to moniters and 800 pics of that guy with glasses who rates users songs, come on).
