Thanks for the info, I'll probably just create a few versions of VM & then explode midi in reaper after playing some chords & assign each single midi to one of the instances if my computer can handle it

The best way (easy) for chords/polyphony from a MIDI track in Reaper is to :
1. Create extra tracks based on the maximum notes in your chord sequences - check your piano roll and find the chord with the most notes (e.g. 5) - so in this case create 5 extra tracks after the midi track.
2. Insert pizMIDIpolyphony on the midi track - set "low channel" to 1 and "high channel" to 5.
3. Create a send to each of the extra tracks - for each one route the MIDI so channel 1 goes to the first track up to channel 5 up to the last extra track. (then each note of the chord goes to a different midi channel number and therefore is routed to the different tracks.
4. Insert VM on each of the routes tracks.
5. Stick all this in a folder so you then have a single fader to control the "chords".
Of course, each VM uses the same patch. I find that once you have the right patch for the first note (on channel 1), then it's easy to drag a new instance of VM from track 1 to the other chord note tracks.
I know it sounds a faff, but once you have done this once, it becomes very easy to do and follows Reaper routing scheme to a "T".

The extra stuff I wrote and the limit of 5 voices is a result of wanting to have independent polyphonic channels *inside* a voltage modular instance. There are only 4 audio in jacks which means a maximum of five voices in this way. And I'm still a bit confused about the strange audio "thru" behavior I've been observing. But it does indeed work.
Another alternative option of a free plugin to split polyphonic MIDI in Reaper is Tale's dynamic poly/mono MIDI router from Tale's JSFX pack (https://www.taletn.com/reaper/mono_synth/).

Hm, obviously then not too long release times or patches with feedback loops ... This round is the first where I had to freeze tracks. You lucky bastards. Even a single instance, dependent on the complexity of the patch, is capable of pushing my CPU over the cliff. I'm saving up for a new machine, but it won't be before at least march, that I will be able to build it.

So, I'm looking @ mono & really cut down on complexity in patches.
I'd prefer to use the included Airwindows fx outside of VM, especially pafnuty

PARTIAL OSCILLATOR PHASE MODULATION TEMPLATE (bottom page https://thesoundofmerlin.com/)
What a great news that we can also use Partial Oscillator by R_Ware which is one of the finest oscillators one can find in the large VM collection. I had totally forgotten that it's a free module.
I included an Eight Step Sequence which makes it easy to tweak the knobs while auditioning. On your MIDI keyboard you can change the key. I added some labels on several modules to show you the functionality of the module within this patch. For example whether an envelope generator is patched to the filter, the VCA or is meant to modulate the phase modulating oscillator. I also added some labels at spots that are extra interesting to tweak.
Further I added some preset variations to get a quick impression of all tonal qualities one may expect from this 2 Partial Oscillators patch. You may also want to try the distortion unit patched between the carrier's VCA and the filter for extra wave shaping. Haven't tried this myself yet though. Have fun with it!

so great to see R_Ware Partial Oscillator getting some love here! <3
Partial Oscillator is absolutely and completely free. it 'only' produces a very clean sine wave, but is capable of exp/lin/tz fm, pm, am/rm and now even delayed feedback phase modulation. while the partial number controls allow you to create a custom additive voice with some unique modulation possibilities, it also feels right at home with many other types of synthesis. i built it with modular/synthesis experimentation and flexibility in mind.
i'd also like to point out that all of my Airwindows ports for VM are free and can therefore be used in this challenge.. so if you're in need of some effect modules for this challenge (or in general) give them a try. there are delays, reverbs, eqs, filters, distortions and all sorts of Airwindows goodies with some R_Ware modular tweaks
