Microsoft uses its vast platform to hook you into their services. You either use them or get plastered about your advantages of using them.

I had a Mac Mini until a couple of years ago, and it was good, but nothing outstanding. The main thing that struck me was that it handled audio better with regard to multiclient audio use. I will probably be getting an M2 Mac Mini soon, but I doubt anything will change much as regards music making. What do you find so special about OSX that I somehow missed?jamcat wrote: Sat Feb 11, 2023 1:11 pm I’ve never argued against using the best platform for the task. Others here have.
I think if you’re running a network, you should use Linux. If you’re doing clerical work, you should use Windows. And if you’re producing music, you should use a Mac.

Have you looked what they recommend? I turned off Start 11 to see and all their recommendations are recently opened files. So it's basically Quick Access right in your Start Menu, which seems like it could be really handy for a lot of people.sQeetz wrote: Sat Feb 11, 2023 4:22 amYou can reduce the amount of recommended stuff, but not turn it off.
Recommended by whom? Based on what? I don't care, I don't want that
Google and Apple do exactly the same. Every time I am forced to use any Google services, I am bombarded with "use Chrome" pop-ups. When I worked on a Mac, it would constantly entreat me to try Safari. They all do it.sQeetz wrote: Sat Feb 11, 2023 2:10 pmMicrosoft uses its vast platform to hook you into their services. That said, Microsoft do seem to be trying to monetise their krap more and more and it is starting to get really noticeable and annoying. Bing results are starting to feel as skewed as Google's lately. It might be time to start looking for some good third party options, except I'd really miss Bing's Image of the Day, even if it is now has ads for Microsoft shit on it.

That's what I meant by Windows 10 being a giant Microsoft billboard.
Btw, I use Firefox on both my Mac and PC. MacOS never bothers me about it, but Windows keeps launching Edge and tells me how wonderful it is and that I need to make it my default.

The multiclient thing is a big one. No audio drivers are required, it has super low latency, you can mix and match multiple audio input and output devices at once, play music in your DAW at 96kHz while watching a YouTube video at 48kHz and a listening to an mp3 or CD track at 44.1. All without any special audio hardware. I can also use my iPad with it as a MIDI controller, for an XY touch pad and even a virtual bow.dellboy wrote: Sat Feb 11, 2023 2:44 pmI had a Mac Mini until a couple of years ago, and it was good, but nothing outstanding. Also, I just get smoother performance, no crashes or hangups, and more plugins running in native Apple Silicon on my Mac. Unlike Windows, Mac doesn't interrupt my workflow with constant notification pop-ups, and is just an all around more productive experience for me. MacOS is not without its flaws, but it just feels a lot less clunky, intrusive, and pushy than Windows.
And when I got my first MacBook Pro, I originally planned to run Windows in Bootcamp, primarily. But pretty quickly I found I was never in the mood to deal with Windows, so eventually I just stopped.

What do you mean "fresh install"?sQeetz wrote: Sun Feb 12, 2023 2:07 am First thing I do with a fresh install is to change all search to duckduckgo.
Apparently no one does that on Windows.

Haha. Yeah, I was pretty much having to do that for a while. Cheap screens, cheap plastic cases. Noisy fans. Heat and battery problems... new laptop, rinse, repeat
That's actually why I got a MacBook Pro to run Windows on originally.
Better build quality than a Windows laptop, which I figured would last longer. And it did. But Windows didn't.

Absolute bullshit. Only an idiot would think to compare a $400 PC laptop to a $2000 Macbook. Apple's laptops are no better built than a comparably priced PC laptop. In fact, I'd suggest Apple laptops have more problems than comparable PC laptops and their warranties are krap by comparison. Apple have been in trouble with government consumer bodies here in Australia on several occasions for not providing the minimum protection required by law.
The results seem marginally less annoying but they don't pay you to use it, do they?sQeetz wrote: Sun Feb 12, 2023 2:07 amFirst thing I do with a fresh install is to change all search to duckduckgo.

Quite the opposite, but I'm tired of see these arguments, and telling exactly the same. Anyone buying a high-end gaming laptop knows they kill ANY MacBook anytime, anywhere. But then... the Apple fanboys don't even know what is a gaming laptop. Do they even know we can PLAY GAMES in a computer?BONES wrote: Sun Feb 12, 2023 11:38 am Absolute bullshit. Gaming laptops are terrible purchases. You will overpay for everything gaming related almost always. You can have a non-gaming laptop for work with decent CPU for way less. Still a lot worse than desktop, but more reasonable than overpriced "gaming" devices. If you don't play games, iGPU will do just fine.fmr wrote: Sun Feb 12, 2023 12:11 pmQuite the opposite, but I'm tired of see these arguments, and telling exactly the same. What exactly are you referring to by "everything gaming related"? Unless you are talking about overpowered graphics (yes, there are some laptops with those) I don't see what else could be "gaming related" only.2DaT wrote: Sun Feb 12, 2023 1:54 pmGaming laptops are terrible purchases. Non-gaming laptops usually are designed for power saving, therefore may be underpowered (sometimes SEVERELY underpowered). And I had bad experiences with iGPU in the past.
